Visual Art 

The Term 3 Unit of Inquiry is called ‘Mini beasts in Art’, which integrates with the Transdisciplinary theme ‘Sharing the Planet’.

 

The Unit focuses on the study of Minibeasts (Entomology), their environment and how Minibeasts are represented in Art. 

Activities include: 

  • Observational drawing, capturing the intricate detail of insects. 
  • Temporary nature sculptures created outside using found natural objects to construct a mini beast- inspired by the work of Andy Goldsworthy. 
  • Insect trail rubbings and print design which are inspired by Australian artist John Wolseley. 
  • Ceramic Mini Beasts- using modelling skills to construct an insect on a leaf base.

Lines of Inquiry

The student will be able to:    

  • Say and spell names of minibeasts like grasshoppers and butterflies. 
  • Make a mini book where they spell names of minibeasts in Japanese. 
  • Say names of body parts of minibeasts. 
  • Count the number of legs and arms of minibeasts in Japanese. 
  • Sing a minibeast song in Japanese.   
  • Make an origami ladybird.   

Japanese Incursion (11 August)

Four Seasons:

Learn about beautiful Japanese seasons and culture. 

A performer will engage our students in learning about Japanese culture and they will enjoy the performer’s ventriloquism, Japanese folktale, and games, etc.  

 

PE Program – Term 3 

The term 3 unit we are focusing on is “Sharing the Planet” 

 

Focus: Athletics Skills 

Running, jumping, leaping, and throwing.  

Refining these skills in modified athletics activities.  Using these skills in races, relays and minor games.  

 

We will also run a Mini Athletics carnival where students get to interact across junior year levels with one another as athletes do from different countries whilst competing at the Commonwealth Games.  

Motor Skills/Game Sense- revise the basic skills covered in Semester One through interactive game play. 

 

Refine the skills of throwing, catching, bouncing and kicking. 

 

Concepts: Connection

How we interact with one another when competing across different year levels as people would when competing for their country at the Commonwealth Games. 

 

 Learner Profile: balanced – understanding the importance of physical and mental balance and personal wellbeing. 

Library  

  

All students are encouraged to borrow books from the Library. The focus is on reading for enjoyment, interest and information. The children also have the opportunity to practise their borrowing skills and further their love of reading. 

The Library program also supports and extends the units of inquiry being studied in each year level and provides classrooms with resources to enrich the units offering varied forms of information 

 

Music

Students will be focusing on ‘rhythm, exploring sounds and tone colour’ and using these in creative ways to compose class and/or small group compositions. 

 

Students will also be focussing on the importance of Change and Connection, as they create and perform their individual and class items. 

 

The students will be: 

  • Learning songs related to ‘Sharing the Planet” with living things.. e.g, Shoo Fly, Cockroach Rap, Please Don’t Squish Me, Inch Worm. 
  • Listening and responding to classical pieces e.g. ‘Flight of the Bumble Bee’’ by Rimsky Korsakov. 
  • Writing more complex rhythms and working in teams to perform their compositions.  
  • Enjoying playing bucket drums to music, to showcase their rhythm skills.  
  • Able to recognize ‘AB form’ and demonstrate this in a class performance.  Students will use instruments for sound effects in a creative ‘Minibeast’ performance, with a particular focus on the PYP concept of Change, as they communicate their ideas and feelings.
