SCIENCE

Foundation - Year 2

Students have quickly adjusted back and are super excited to learn about our new Science topic - natural resources. Students have discussed and recorded some natural resources such as plants, animals and water. We have also explored where water is accessed and used at school. Next week, we will explore the water cycle

Years 3/4

3/4 students will be exploring the Sun, Earth and moon. They will be learning about the position of Earth and Moon from the Sun, discovering the relative sizes and distances between them. They will also learn about how the changing positions of these celestial bodies influence weather, seasons and natural phenomenon like eclipses.

Years 5 /6

This term students will be exploring our Solar system. They will be discovering various properties of each planet. They will learn about the relative movement and distance between each of the planets from the Sun.

Foundation - Year 6 Science at Home: Students will be assigned a task on Seesaw which the family may choose to do together in their free timeIf you are having trouble logging into Seesaw at home, please ask your child’s classroom teacher for support. Any questions regarding the task, please see your child’s Science teacher.

Physical Education

Foundation

In Foundation, we have had a great start to the term. We have started our unit on Catching, which is a Fundamental Motor Skill used in a large array of sports. The main focus of this unit will be to get students familiar with the key points needed to catch, while also promoting spatial awareness and ball handling skills. We look forward to seeing the foundation students developing these skills and we strongly encourage families to do some basic practice at home.

Years 1 & 2

The Year 1&2 students have had a tremendous start to Term 4. We have been focusing on our soccer skills, specifically the dribble, pass and kick. The soccer kick is a Fundamental Motor Skill and will overlap to other sports. We will continue to learn these skills for the next 2 weeks. We encourage families to discuss these skills and if time permits, we would love to see you out there practising these skills with your children. The Year 1&2 students are enthusiastic and have loved learning about Soccer.

Years 3 to 6

With the Cricket season right around the corner, we took the initiative to focus on necessary skills needed to participate in the sport of Cricket. Our focus has been specifically around the Overhand Throw which is a Fundamental Motor Skill and crucial when fielding. We have also looked at how this technique is varied to create the Cricket Bowl. Students have been working on both their fielding skills (Throwing and Catching) and their Bowling Technique. We have seen a lot of interest and enthusiasm towards the sport and encourage students to continue practising these skills at home in their free time.

Inter-School Sport

It has been a big start to Term 4 with 45 students from Year 5/6 braving the wild weather to take part in the Billy Slater Shield - Rugby Gala Day last Friday at Roxburgh Park. Although we didn’t get to play our full allotment of matches, the students all enjoyed the games they played and showed a real talent for the game of Rugby League.

This week we had 5 students representing Gilgai Plains at the Northern Metro Region Athletics Carnival, congratulations to Nt, Angie, Carter, Isabella and Zuhra for your amazing efforts and well done on making it so far!

The sport doesn’t stop there, we have our Girls Basketball Team and Girls Cricket Team competing at the Woodlands Division Finals in the coming weeks and we wish both teams the best of luck!

Our Foundation to Year 6 School Cross Country is locked in for the 18th of November, to be held at the Kalkallo Recreation Reserve. It is time to step up our running in preparation for this House event!
