Years 3-6 Waranga Athletics

The Waranga Sports was held on Thursday 18th August. That meant an early start was needed for Mr Hill, Mr Busch and I as we began setting up for a big day ahead. A big week of rain meant that we had to cross our fingers that it would hold off for the whole day. Unfortunately it didn't happen, as the kids battled through torrential rain to complete the day of athletics. It just meant that the school clothes were going to be sitting next to the heater all night to be ready for the next day.

The students had a great day after finally being able to put all that practice into the competition. The relay races sparked a lot of excitement within the group at the end of the day. All students gathered during the final 100m sprint to cheer on their peers and give them extra motivation to finish the race. It was great to see so many students getting involved with chants towards the relay teams.

All students participated well and a number of students have qualified for the Division Athletics in Bendigo on Monday 12th September. We also had three Age Champions that have been listed below. Well done to those students who were the best of the best in their age group!

Years 7-12 St Augustine's Athletics

The time had finally come for our Years 7-12 athletics to be held. Despite a whole week of rain before this event, Mr Hill was determined to make the day happen. Due to the rain, the line-marking was postponed, which meant Mr Hill had to go to Cooma to finish it all in one day. With the radar clearing up it meant that athletics was a go-ahead despite a “soggy” ground.

It was an early start for the PE team and some student helpers as we began setting up to ensure the day would run as smoothly as possible. All the buses rolled into the Cooma Recreation Reserve and the day officially got underway. It was a great start early as the music was pumping and the distance events kicked off.

Once the running events were done all age groups went out to start the rotations for their events. It was all uphill from there as the sun began shining, the tracklist kept getting better and everyone was enjoying a great day. The canteen was a very popular stop as they provided many wonderful snacks for the students and staff to enjoy.

The shot put station was provided shovels in order to retrieve the shot puts after they were thrown, as the ground was very soggy in that area. The 100m sprint was also carved up by the end of the day as it saw a lot of traffic. It was great to see that we had many sign ups on the day, despite the condition on the oval being pretty poor.

The day was beginning to wrap up, which meant it was time for the staff to put on their runners for the staff vs students relay. The Year 12 girls pushed very hard for a female staff team and they got their wish. Unfortunately our dream team runners couldn’t get the job done despite having a trained athlete, Mrs Angelino on their side. Year 12 student Tom Lloyd had some very questionable commentary as he mostly yelled the word “baton” and didn’t even know which teachers were running.

It was now time for the males to put on a clinic. Despite his best efforts to cheat, Mr Hill still managed to start late, a few sloppy transitions meant that I had to make up some ground in the last 100m. Unfortunately I ran so slow I began sinking in the mud and the Year 12s got the better of us. There is always next year though.

Just when we thought the day was over, the kids piled onto the bus and it did not go anywhere. After further inspection the bus was bogged. Some attempts of getting it out were very unsuccessful and the kids were stranded at Cooma. Fortunately another bus returned to Cooma and got all the kids back to school safely with the PE team that stayed behind to pack up having a few laughs about it. That was when the unthinkable hit us. We loaded up the trailer full of equipment onto Mr Hill’s little car and found out we were the ones that were bogged. We called in the big guns as Mr McIntyre reassured us that his 4WD would get us out. The wheels spun and the only direction the ute went was down (Sorry Cooma Cricket Club). The only solution was to unpack the trailer and repack where we wouldn't get bogged. After what felt like several hours, we finally got everything repacked and headed back to Kyabram.

Overall it was a great day and it was good to see so many students giving every event a shot. Well done to Mr Hill and Miss Johns as they worked so hard to make this day happen.

Well done to Augustine who won the Athletics Shield for 2022! We will have many students heading off to the next round of competition in Shepparton during Week 9.
