Children’s Book Week - Dreaming with eyes open

The Children’s Book Council of Australia runs Book Week every year across the country. The theme for 2022 is Dreaming with eyes open and runs from August 19th to 26th.

Students have been investigating the shortlisted books for the Book of the Year Awards. The CBCA judges announced their winners on Friday last week. Jetty Jumping won the Early Childhood category; Iceberg won the Picture Book category; Glasshouse of Stars won the Younger Readers (novel) category; The Boy Who Tried to Shrink His Name won the Crichton Award for best new illustrator and the book Still Alive won the Eve Pownall (information book) Award.

As part of Book Week the Shire of Campaspe Library has given us some sign up cards to encourage all of our community to become members of this great free source of reading, study support and activities related to books. These membership forms have been given to students to take home so you may notice them in school bags or library bags this week.

At lunchtime this week, students have made dream catchers, name bracelets and done animal painting as extra Book Week activities. We have also been running a Book Week competition which ends today at lunchtime. Many students entered the colouring in part of the competition and there are some spectacular efforts being shown. The winners will be announced next week.

Library Lessons

Students have been voting on their favourite book from the shortlist this term. Our voting wall filled up and it was obvious that we had some runaway winners.

The book which collected the most votes from our Foundation to Year 2 students was Walk of the Whales by Nick Bland, a book about whales coming into the cities and towns because humans were polluting their home - the ocean.

The book which really captured our Years 3 to 6 students was Stellarphant by James Foley about an elephant who does not let any obstacles put in her way stop her from achieving her dream to be an astronaut.

This week, to celebrate Book Week, students listened to the story No Such Book and had fun putting on outfits from Mrs Baker’s dressup box.

Book Character Parade

Our annual Book Character Parade is being held today, Friday 26th August, at 10.00am. Students and Staff have been asked to come dressed as a book character or something related to our ‘Dreaming’ theme. There is no cost involved. We are looking forward to seeing parents and carers coming along to see the students in their amazing outfits.
