From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

St Augustine’s Feast Day

Today St Augustine’s College celebrates a very special day on our calendar:  St Augustine’s Feast Day.

Saint Augustine of Hippo was also called Aurelius Augustinus. He was a philosopher, theologian and the bishop of Hippo Regius in Numidia, North Africa. He was born on 13th November 354 in Thagaste, Numidia in the modern-day Souk Ahras, Algeria and died on 28th August 430 at the age of 75 in Hippo Regius, Numidia (modern-day Annaba, Algeria).

As a student, he was very intelligent and wanted to learn about different things. He believed that learning was a lifelong process and not just restricted to being at school. He believed that the fundamental task of a student was to learn about themselves, learning about others, discover the world and make sure that he brings happiness to yourself and others.

A well-known sermon of St Augustine talks about the importance of caring for others. St Augustine wrote,” Do not judge others – but rather judge yourself. Pay attention to yourself, examine yourself, listen to yourself. Do what is right and just to all those in your presence.”

As a student, St Augustine inspires us to desire to seek the truth. A thirst for knowledge and truth. Knowledge to build a community of justice and love. He encourages you to search for wisdom. To support your friends, your teachers, your fellow students with their quest to never stop learning and support your friends as we journey together in life.

St Augustine was also a teacher. He opened many schools both in rural and metro areas. Throughout his whole life, he considered himself a teacher, encouraging other teachers to teach knowledge and wisdom to students. It is known that St Augustine would walk the streets of Rome, chanting “take and read, take and read” to the children that walked past. St Augustine believed that education was for all people and believed that teaching was the most important profession that anyone could undertake. Another quote from St Augustine reads, “the love of knowledge and truth should invite us to continue learning. The love of others should compel us to teach. Teachers are like milestones; they show the way to others.”

Foundation to Year 6 Athletics Carnival/Years 7-12 Athletics Carnival

Earlier this term, the Foundation to Year 6 Athletics Carnival was postponed due to poor weather conditions.  In consultation with the Campaspe Shire, I am pleased to announce that we have been able to secure a new date.

The Foundation to Year 6 Athletics Carnival has been rescheduled for Thursday 1st September and will be held at the Northern Oval, Kyabram. You are most welcome to attend the day. The Athletics Carnival will begin at 9.30am and the schedule/timing of events will be communicated via Operoo today.

Our Years 7 - Year 12 Athletics Carnival was able to go ahead last Friday at Cooma. It was wonderful to see so many of our students participate in the events and a great day was had by all. A special thanks to our Sports Coordinators: Michael Hill and Billi Johns who led the day.

Beaut Blokes Breakfast

The F-6 Athletics Carnival will also coincide with our “Beaut Blokes Breakfast.” You would have received an invitation last week regarding this event. If you are able to join us, I request that you complete the form that was forwarded via Operoo to all parents last week, for catering purposes, no later than Monday 29th August.

Father’s Day Stall

In addition to the Beaut Blokes Breakfast on Thursday 1st September, St Augustine’s will hold a Father’s Day Stall on Friday 2nd September. All Foundation to Year 6 students will have the opportunity to purchase a gift for their dad, granddad or other significant person in their lives. All items are priced between $1 - $7. Students are encouraged to bring their own shopping bag for their purchases. A special thanks to Alicia Collins and Jenny McMeeken for coordinating this event.

Book Week

As I write this newsletter article, I am delighted to look outside my office to see the many different Book Week costumes worn by our students. It is wonderful to see so many students have dressed up in their favourite book. My costume is from the book “Diary of a 6th Grade Ninja”. Chase Cooper is the main protagonist of Diary of a 6th Grade Ninja. He is 11 years of age, likes video games, comic books and watching cheesy alien movies with his father.
