Literacy

Dawn Heldt - Learning Diversity Co-Leader

As part of our literacy focus, we have started the Vocabulary Word of the Day

The “Word of the Day” is posted in the CLC foyer and each teacher uses the word at least once during this term.  This means the students are exposed to this word many times during the day.  The word of the day is also defined and used in a sentence in the classrooms as a follow up.

“The word of the day is interesting because we get to read the word, its meaning and every day it is a new word”. Shayla Freeman yr.8

Our literacy goal for 2023 is to increase student reading engagement and improve staff confidence in using the reading strategies Making Connections, Questioning, and Summarising by the end of 2023 by embedding these strategies into all areas of the curriculum and regularly measuring and evaluating the impact of these strategies on student reading outcomes.

We are encouraging students to understand what is being read. Reading words is one part of reading. The other half of reading is understanding what is read or comprehending the text. We read to get meaning from what is written. Comprehension is the ability to understand what is read. This is an important part of developing as a reader.

In line with our goal we have been encouraging our students to read with understanding and meaning in particular focusing on the three reading strategies.

We encourage you to ask probing questions to help your child improve their comprehension of what they are reading! We also ask that you remind your child to visit the CLC before school starts 8.30-8.45. for Modelled Reading on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Talk to your child about what they are reading and ask some probing questions about the book. For example, you could ask:

"I wonder why the character did that?"

or "How do you think she felt when that happened?"

or "What can we learn from this story?"

I thank you for your support with your child’s literacy needs.
