Middle School (Y9-10)

Year 9 History

On Wednesday 5th April the Year 9 classes who are studying History in Semester 1 (9B, 9D & 9F) were invited to represent Cheltenham Secondary College at The Melbourne Legacy's 91st ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony for Students. After attending their Period 1 classes and leaving at the start of Period 2 we arrived at the Shrine of Remembrance and were seated in our position just in time for the 11.00am start of the ceremony.

The event was attended by approximately 4000 students from many different schools around Victoria. As you would expect the Cheltenham students represented the college with dignity and recognised the solemnity of the occasion. Legacy provided students with sprigs of Rosemary and Australian Flags which our students enjoyed waving during the musical numbers that were dispersed throughout the ceremony. During the Commemoration Ceremony, Joshua Keys and Eleanor Swales laid a wreath at the Eternal Flame on behalf of the college.

After a short break students were then invited to explore the Shrine and visit the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Some of the students were suitably impressed by Boat Number 5 which was actually used in the Landing at Gallipoli.

It was a fantastic day and a wonderful opportunity for the students involved. Thanks to the staff who supported the event. These same classes will be learning more about World War 1 next Term and as part of their studies will be returning to the Shrine for a more formal educational program about some of the areas they visited today. For the other Year 9 students who are studying History in Semester 2 we will be organising a similar opportunity to be involved in Remembrance Day events as part of their course.
