Despite companies working to get more women on board, the concept of a female tradie still comes as a surprise to many. Women make up just two per cent of workers in the Australian construction industry.
The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union of Victoria along with local Industry partners, TAFE providers and training organisations are working hard to break down the concrete barrier and encourage more women to get on the tools and pursue pathways in trade-based areas. An important part of this is visiting schools to discuss career options in trade, encourage students to pursue a trade and to deliver the message that there are more trades out there than just chippies, sparkies and plumbers.
Western Heights College was lucky enough to have some inspiring female tradies visit the school this week and present to a small group of students from Years 10, 11 & 12. The presentation involved the presenters sharing their various pathway stories, giving advice about trade-based industries, outlining the importance of sourcing supportive employers and discussing how to begin exploring training in trade-based areas. The session finished up with a Q&A and some hands-on activities where the students were given the opportunity to “get on the tools”.

Western Heights College welcomed back two of its past students last week to take part in VCE-VM and Year 12 events.
On Thursday, we were delighted to invite Durham Green (Class of 1993) back to the school as the special guest judge of the VM Toastie Challenge. Durham's the owner of Maple Bakery in Torquay. He told us a little about how his cafe came about, why they chose that location and what they serve. He also gave each team some great feedback about their toasties and even had some gift vouchers for everyone.
On Friday, the Year 12 students were treated to a Wellbeing Day breakfast with Michelle Gerdtz (Class of 1997), who's the general manager of Read the Play, a mental health literacy program for young people aged 14-19. Michelle spoke about her pathway since school, and how her passion for sport and community has led her to where she is today. She also shared some valuable advice on how to juggle multiple priorities, stay motivated, and much more.
Thank you to Durham and Michelle for coming back and giving back to your old school through volunteering!

Guzman y Gomez is opening a new store in Leopold in June and are looking to employ 50-70 staff members for the opening.
We love what we do, serving affordable fresh food with great customer service. We also love bringing in students with little to no experience and training them to serve customers, build rapport, work with food, follow food safety and hygiene guidelines, and grow their interpersonal and workplace skills.
