Farewell Year 12 2016

Year 12 Final Assembly

This week was the last week of classes for our Year 12 cohort of 2016. After 13 years of schooling they are moving on to the next phase of their lives.

At the official farewell assembly on Monday the 2016 Prep students presented the Year 12s with certificates and a memento from the school. Two of the preps also prayed for them. Four Year 12’s from this year’s group have been at the school since prep, Jessica Ireson, David Anderson, Melanie Chin and Ashley Diamantis.

Mark Stephens reflected on the difficult and the enjoyable times in school life and the memories that have been created. He highlighted the importance of friends and supporting each other through these times.

The students were encouraged to persevere in their love for God by drawing near to God, holding unswervingly to their hope, and spurring each other on to love and good deeds from Hebrew 10: 22-24.

Mrs Wansbrough accepted the gift of a time capsule from the Year 12s which is to be opened in 30 years She encouraged and prayed for them as well.

We thank them for all they have contributed to the life of our School. They are part of our St Andrews family and we pray that God will bless them and keep them close through the exams and on into whatever he has prepared for them in the future.

Mullum Cluster VET 2016 Awards Evening

I had the privilege of attending the Mullum Cluster VET Awards on Tuesday 18 October.

It was great to see the work of the students doing VET on display and have three students from St Andrews Christian College nominated for awards: Ian Neo (Year 10) - Certificate II in Engineering Studies – 1st Year, Tabitha Robinson (Year 11) – Certificate II in Hairdressing & Certificate II in Retail, Make-up and Skincare – 1st Year and Benjamin Lohning (Year 12) - Certificate II in Engineering Studies – 2nd Year.

Two of our students, Tabitha and Ian received the top prize as the most outstanding students in their course and Benjamin was a runner up.

Undertaking a VET program requires commitment and effort. Every Wednesday these students are at school till lunch and then travel to their courses, Ian and Benjamin to Swinburne TAFE, Wantirna campus  and Tabitha to 1 to 1 Beauty Therapy Training, Boronia.

All three students, Tabitha, Ian and Benjamin, have worked hard to be nominated for the prestigious Mullum Cluster VET Awards and should be proud of their achievements.

It was a special moment when all those nominated went up on the stage and to hear two of our students being announced as the winners as the top student in their course: Tabitha Robinson and Ian Neo, from St Andrews Christian College.

Ian Neo – Certificate II in Engineering Studies – 1st Year, Winner

Tabitha Robinson – Certificate II in Hairdressing & Certificate II in Retail, Make-up and Skincare – 1st Year, Winner

Benjamin Lohning – Certificate II in Engineering Studies – 2nd Year, Runner-up

Australia -ASEAN Youth Forum  - 2 September 2016

Six of  our students from Year 10 participated in the Australia – ASEAN Youth Forum on 2nd September at Melbourne University.  A total of 11 schools participated in the Forum and schools represented  either Australia  or one of the 11 ASEAN countries  as country delegates and debated on three key issues that have great significance in this region : trade,  climate change and refugees.

Our school was chosen to represent  Australia and our delegates, Raaya Singh and Hewett  Ng delivered Australia’s position on the three  issues  at the 1st plenary session.  Following this, at the  2nd plenary session, all delegates  engaged in a round of discussion and debate to arrive at three  declarative statements for each issue and finally,  at the 3rd plenary session,  delegates voted on the Forum Declaration.

It was an extremely enriching experience for our students .  The Forum increased their knowledge and understanding of the member countries of ASEAN and Australia’s relationship with the region.

In addition , the Forum was an excellent opportunity for  students  understand   the benefits and challenges of regional dialogue, intergovernmental cooperation and conflict resolution.

Our congratlations to our team of fine ‘delegates’: Raaya Singh,  Aaron Van den Bemt, Brandon Chen, Seth Rakers,  Brendan Elliott,  Hewett Ng .

Education can also make a lasting difference in our students’ lives and help develop strong character traits such as integrity, reliability, honesty, responsibility and honor. Many look at education as an investment and a path towards good health, empowerment and employment. Evidence shows that, on average, each additional year of education boosts a person’s income by 10 per cent.

What kind of person will the university course shape you to become?

Christ-centred education, including tertiary institutions prepare students to make a difference in the world around them and into their professionalcareer. They can give students greater direction and confidence in line with biblical principles.
