The Castlemaine Secondary College Artist-in-Residence program has a bright future, thanks to a healthy injection of $8,500.00 from the Art Support Group auction that was held at the Market Building, 44 Mostyn Street on Sunday 3rd of November. The Artist-in-Residence program was launched this year with Debra Goldsmith leading the way and inspiring students with her spectacular recycled plastic bottle chandeliers that lit up Ballarat’s 'White Night'. She will contribute to the College’s Learning Festival.
The Support Group, and the art teachers, were astonished and inspired by the heart-warming generosity of well-known and professional local artists who donated their creative works; some valued at four figures. Amongst the painters, printmakers, sculptors and photographers were several who were teachers, parents, grandparents, aunts or uncles of students at the College.
A keen crowd, attracted by Support-Group-funded newspaper advertisements and a social media campaign, came to view artworks and see the student show simultaneously on display; with some of the year 12 works were as desirable as some of the works to be auctioned! Forty-eight people registered for the auction and while perusing, they enjoyed a plentiful spread of savouries and sweets contributed by Murnong Mammas and wine and other drinks supplied by a member of the Art Support Group.
Our auctioneer Justin Shortall, (who acts in local theatre), put his talent to work in coaxing bids for nearly 50 artworks of all kinds and styles, and buyers competed to drive sales at unexpected prices. Others secured bargains above the reserves set by the artists, but at an enviable discount below market value. Even works passed-in attracted further offers after the auction was over, with Rick Amor’s etching reaching the full market value of $3500.00
Castlemaine Secondary College visual arts is grateful for the support of these artists who so generously contributed: Michelle Pleasance, Rhyll Plant, Katherine Freeman, Peter Watts, Marte Newcombe, Zoe Hambleton, Jan Palethorpe, Andrew Goodman, Jenny Carrington, Lyn Raymer, Ken Killeen, Zoe Amor, Inta Krumins, Michael Graeve, Michael Wolfe, Stephen Tester, Kareen Anchen, David Fraser, Melissa Scott, Tobias Richardson, Terence McKenna, Ben Laycock, James McArdle, Lyn Edie, Diane Thompson, Kir Larwill, Justin Andrews, Eliza Jane Gilchrist, Clayton Tremlett, Lorena Carrington, Robert Cue, Roz Avent, Faun Turner, Elissa Sadgrove, Helen Lehman, Melinda Harper, Diana Orinda-Burns, Jeff Gardner, Rick Amor.
