Variety Show
As we say in show business, ‘The show must go on’, and in our circumstances it definitely did. With an unfortunate incident occurring at the beginning of Thursday’s opening performance, cast, crew and even the set list were left in a bit of a pickle. Although with the strength, determination and willpower of our Performing Arts Team, we were able to push through and continue to put on a very successful show. This wouldn’t have been possible if it weren't for the tireless effort and hard work put in by all the students and teachers in rehearsals, which started way back in term two during lunchtime, after school, weekends and even on the holidays.
Both evening shows were performed in front of sold out audiences, including a matinee show to Primary School kids from within the Melton community. There were many incredible acts, performed by our amazing Music, Drama and Theatre Studies students, ranging from Years 9-11, which included the likes of Sweeney Todd, Legally Blonde and Footloose. While our Instrumental Music students performed some of our favourite numbers from musicals such as Once, Hedwig – Harry Potter, Dream Girls and We Will Rock You. The Lunchtime Dance Club put on a spectacular Michael Jackson Medley with songs from his famous Broadway show Thriller-The Musical.
As a senior student performing in her last show, it was an honour to mentor and guide so many students through the many highs and lows that putting on a production can bring. I’m going to miss the atmosphere created throughout these shows and the bond between students that forms a community like no other. A better word I like to use, is ‘Family.’ I am changed for the better because of this family, and have created friendships and memories that will last me a lifetime. I am so incredibly grateful for all the opportunities that have been given to me along the way, which have brought out abilities I didn't know I had. I’ve been able to choreograph dance numbers and even direct my own show, and these wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for our incredible Performing Arts teachers.
I can’t wait to come back in 2017 to see what the next production will be, but also to see the growth within the students I’ve been able to work closely with this year. Being a leader within this family has been an amazing experience, and I definitely encourage anyone willing to take on the role. As Irving Berlin once said “There’s no business like show business” and he couldn’t be more right.
Thank you for an amazing experience; it’s been one like no other.
This is Chelsea Pollock, signing off for the last time!
