NGV SEAL Mentoring and History Excursion

Year 7 Reflections

On Monday, 18 March 2019, Year 7 and 10 SEAL classes attended an excursion to the National Gallery of Victoria for the purpose of developing their creative writing skills and viewing the ancient historic artefact. Year 10 students will develop their mentoring skills through conducting a writing workshop with Year 7 students. Read some of the reflections from the students themselves below.

We first entered and saw the ancient artefacts room. It was good to start off with something we were familiar with. Both the Japanese and the Chinese ceramics and paintings were very pretty and interesting to look at, I could relate to and recall from memory, information in the Chinese artefacts room. I loved the creative writing part of the day. The painting my partner and I chose (The Bar) gave me lots of ideas on a new story.

On Monday at the NGV exhibition we discovered a lot of information about the ancient past by just looking at the sculpture. I felt really happy working with the Yr10 on the paintings. They gave me a few tips on including everything, or most things, we saw in our creative story. I found the Japanese and Chinese things really nice and looked quite clean even though it was from the past.

The trip to the NGV was a very educational and fun way for the Yr10s to mentor us. We first looked at the artifacts about Greek mythology, Egyptian and South American artefacts. My favourite part was when we were mentored looking at the artwork and doing creative writing with the Yr 10s.

On Monday 18 March, my class went to the National Gallery of Victoria. I enjoyed looking at the Japanese ceramics, I think the designs were unique and one of a kind. I also enjoyed looking at the artefacts when we first arrived. Working with the Yr10s was a good experience. I was fascinated by the meaning and stories behind the paintings.

The NGV was a fun trip. We saw some Greek potteries but I had to focus on the Egypt part because I had to find an artefact that matched my historical person. Which was Queen Nefertiti. We went to see some Japanese ceramics. They made me think of the potteries I use at home. In the Chinese section there were some artefacts that were from temples and I even found two statues that were found in tombs.
