Mathematics

Maths is more than just numbers!

To be numerate is to confidently and effectively understand and work with numbers and mathematics to meet the everyday demands of life. We need numeracy to solve problems we face in daily life including cooking, reading a map or bill, reading instructions and even scoring while playing sports. It is more than just numbers. Over the summer holidays, you can continue to develop your child's numeracy skills through:

- continuing to use Mathletics - there are plenty of activities on Mathletics which are great to use such as the modules, rainforest maths, live Mathletics.

- encouraging your child to use mathematical language such as 'how much,' 'how big,' 'how many.'

- talking about occasions when you are using maths in daily life such as cooking, reading maps, building, shopping, budgets.

- exploring situations involving money

- using everyday tools like tape measures, rulers, kitchen scales and talking about the units of measurement being used.

- estimating when shopping - estimating total cost and change

- following a recipe and cooking together - allowing your child to use measuring tools to measure out ingredients

- reading and using timetables, calendars and clocks - such as catching public transport or movie times.
