Indonesian Update

Last time, our Indonesian theme was ‘Selamat datang’, which means ‘Welcome’. This week, the Year 5 and 6 students have been practising using ‘Selamat’ in greetings at different times of day and using appropriate hand gestures to greet people in different contexts.
Did you know that different languages divide the day differently? Learning another language is a great way to understand how different people think differently. In English we switch from ‘Good morning’ to ‘Good afternoon’ when the sun is at its highest point in the sky, but in Indonesian the day is divided into ‘before it gets hot’, ‘hot time’, ‘starting to cool down’ and ‘night time’. Here’s a video from Guru Andi to tell you more and help you with pronunciation. To learn about appropriate hand gestures, ask a student in 5/6 GP or 5/6 MS.
Sampai jumpa!
