Trevor Barkla

February 2023

Introducing Trevor Barkla who, as Head of Numeracy will be teaching all things Mathematics

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

While studying Maths at University I did lots of tutoring and enjoyed helping others learn.

How long have you been in the teaching game?

10 years.

What was your last place of employment - school/university or another organisation?

Wantirna College.

What do you love most about teaching?

  1. Sharing the moments of accomplishment when a student makes progress working through a challenging problem or begins to understand a difficult concept.
  2. The random conversations with students.

What has been one of your best teaching moments?

Getting an entire bus of Year 11 students singing all the words to Bohemian Rhapsody during a Central Australia camp.

What would be 3 things that you would like your students to know about you?

  1.  I have an almost 1 year old son named Charlie.
  2.  I love the outdoors.
  3.  I survived being attacked by a stingray when I was 7.

Where is your favourite holiday destination?

Alpine National Park in VIC or Kosciuszko National Park in NSW are high on the list, but pretty much anywhere with mountains and rivers.

What TV show/series did you last binge watch?

Yellowstone and The Last of Us.

If you could wear Harry’s invisibility cloak for one day, where would you go and what would you do? That’s Harry Potter’s cloak not Harry Ruff’s cloak 😊

I would sneak into the DET office and add a few extra digits to every teacher’s long service leave balance.

What is the one piece of ‘advice’ or the one thing that you always say to your students?

If you walk out of Maths with a headache that’s good because it means you have been exercising your brain.

Thank you, and welcome to Mullauna College, Trevor!
