Library News

As part of our Library Lover’s Week earlier in the term the library ran a book cover design competition, students created an original cover for one of two books that reflected the content taken from the book blurb and was visually appealing. The entries were all exceptional and the judges had a very difficult decision to make.

Caitlin Wu received the runner up prize and the winning entry was created by Etain Cardno. The winning cover is now being used as the new cover for the physical book in the library collection. Congratulations to our winners and all of the entrants.

During Library Lover’s Week students signed up for a library tote bag decorating activity. Over multiple breaks students came in and designed and created their own image for their bag using fabric pens. The designs were great, and it was amazing to see how creative and supportive of each other our students are.

The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) have announced the notable titles for 2023, with the shortlist soon to be announced. The selection highlights fantastic Australian children's books of high literary and artistic quality. Students in Years 7 to 9 are encouraged to enter the Collide Book Trailer Competition.

The competition asks students to create a unique and original book trailer, maximum one minute in length, featuring one of the books from this year's notables list. The competition closes on the 21 July 2023. More details can be found at https://www.cbcansw.org.au/collide-book-trailers

Another great competition for students to be involved in is the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Award which is now open and accepting entries until the 20th of June. The optional theme for this year is the winding road. More information can be found at

A reminder that the Premier’s Reading Challenge is underway and students in Years 7 to 9 can enter by going to the official website https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html logging in with their school login details and adding books to their individual reading log. Any students having issues with the website are asked to come and see me in the library.

A new schedule for the library has been implemented this term. Before school the library is open for quiet senior study only with junior students still able to come in to print assignments and to return or borrow books. Break 1 Monday to Wednesday students can use the computers for music creation and educational games, however, priority is still given to students completing school related work. In Break 2 the students can use the computer area to do school-related tasks aside from Break 2 on Tuesday when the library is for quiet reading only. Create writing club will still be running Break 1 on Friday each week. Any student is welcome to attend.
