What a start to 2023 we’ve had in Mathematics!

Year 7 have settled in nicely and have been solidifying their foundational knowledge ready to extend their understanding throughout high school. Also in Stage 4, Year 8 have been introduced to Algebraic Techniques.

In Stage 5, Year 9 have been leaning about Financial Mathematics as well as Probability. Year 10 have also studied Financial Mathematics and also developed their skills in Algebra, Equations and Inequations.

Our Stage 6 students have worked through their various courses ready to complete their first assessment tasks for the calendar year. Many assessments require mathematical investigations to allow students to see the relevance of their mathematical skills and the real life applications where their skills can be used.

This term has seen the introduction of the now famous “Golden Calculator”. This is awarded at each Celebration Assembly (twice per term) to recognise a student who consistently strives for success in Maths. Students receive the privilege of using the golden calculator in class as well as a $10 voucher for our school canteen. Congratulations to both Kalem Harris (Year 12) and Jake Harding (Year 8) who were our winners this term.

It has been impressive to see the large number of students attending Maths and Milo before school on Tuesdays.  This is a place where students drop-in to room GL9 any time from 8.00am. Students can receive assistance with their Maths from a teacher, work through Maths problems with their friends, complete their Maths homework, and of course, get a free hot or cold Milo. It has been especially pleasing that this is being accessed by students of all year groups.

Our junior students are utilising MathsOnline as a platform for weekly homework. This allows students access to much needed repetition of classroom concepts in a format that provides instant feedback to the students. The program also allows students to watch a video recording of concepts in their own time to clarify their understanding. All Year 7 students have weekly homework due each Thursday and Year 8 each Friday. Years 9 and 10 classes have individual arrangements with their teachers.

I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday break and look forward to a positive Term 2.
