Every day every student at Fatima joins in ten minutes of mental strategy practice as part of their numeracy program. Students play games and solve quickfire questions to get them thinking and using their number facts. This will help them to become really confident mathematicians with lots of strategies up their sleeves! Most importantly, it is not about writing everything down - students use lots of concrete materials and (of course) do lots of talking about their strategies.
Just like reading LOTS of books to become amazing readers, to become a great mathematician you can never do too much counting! Try to bring counting into home life - from counting the plates for dinner to averaging the electricity usage each day for a month! Any chance you have to show your child how you use Maths in your daily life is really beneficial as they gain confidence and skills.
There are lots of ways you can bring Maths into real-life situations, and this will help your child to see how Maths is used every day! A few websites are suggested below. If you'd like some other new ideas please get in touch.
In mid March Year 3 and 5 students will be completing the NAPLAN testing. Please get in touch via the email below to ask any questions about NAPLAN etc. At Fatima we view NAPLAN as a snapshot of our students on that day - we certainly look at much more than a test score to mark our students' progress! Information for parents can be found ont he website below:
