Autism Inclusion Teacher

Autism Inclusion Teachers are a new, nation-leading initiative which aims to build educator understanding and knowledge around supporting autistic children and young people.

I have worked at Magill School for nine years across the junior primary and primary classes. This year I am looking forward to undertaking the role of Autism Inclusion Teacher at Magill School one day a week, as well as teaching the Year 2 children in P16.

All Autism Inclusion Teachers across the state are beginning the year in this new role by building on our own teaching expertise, knowledge and understanding of autism through engaging in autism-specific training with highly regarded training providers. We will then share our learnings and resources with our colleagues to utilise in teaching autistic children and young people in their own classes.

What is included in the Autism Inclusion Teachers role:

  • Engage in formal learning on autism
  • Ongoing collaborative practice with fellow Autism Inclusion Teachers
  • Promote best practice related to autism with fellow educators including teachers, School Services Officers, Aboriginal Community Education Officers and Bilingual School Services Officers at our school
  • Improve school support for autistic children and young people, that works for our school

What is not included in the role of Autism Inclusion Teachers:

  • Serving as a single point of contact for families
  • Delivering wellbeing, couselling or mediation support
  • Being solely responsible for reviewing, updating and developing personalised plans, eg One plans.
  • Conducting professional assessments of delivering therapeutic supports typically performed by allied health or medical practitioners.
  • Leading the development of individual funding applications.

This is an exciting opportunity to enhance the support we provide to autistic children and young people at our school.

With kindness,
