An opportunity has arisen for Kalinda Primary School to nominate an applicant to attend the 2023 Asian Pacific Children’s Convention in Fukuoka.

If your child has a keen interest in Japanese studies, and is enthusiastic, confident, and ready to embrace a new and challenging experience then this opportunity could be for them.

The applicant must have his/her date of birth between 1st August 2011 and 31st July 2012.

Please read the following information and if you’re interested, send an email to White Sensei with your name and your child’s name by Friday 7th February. From those that express interest, we will choose one student to represent Kalinda Primary School and complete the application process.

The Australia-Japan Society of Victoria has been invited to send four children (2 boys and 2 girls) to the BRIDGE Summer Camp (Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention) in Fukuoka Japan, which will be held for approximately 10 days from the middle of July 2023 (please note, this is during school term).

Pre-covid, for the past 31 years the Australia–Japan Society has sent a group of children accompanied by a Chaperone and Peace Ambassador to participate in this experience and it highly recommends this wonderful opportunity being offered to Victorian primary school students.  It is a unique event, which allows approximately 180 eleven-year-old children from 43 regions around the Asian Pacific region to share in a truly international exchange.

After three years of a virtual Summer Camp, APCC have again decided to hold the program in person! This year, the program will involve an Orientation camp (approx. 2-3 days) and a homestay program will then be held (approx. 5-6 days including school visits and a celebration/performance event)!

All the Australian children and Chaperone/s will be home hosted in the same area and the Chaperone is contactable by the host families at all times.

Expenses covered by the Asian Pacific Children’s Convention Executive Committee in Japan are:

  1. Round-trip airfare, including airport tax between Melbourne and Fukuoka.
  2. All transportation fees in Japan.
  3. Meals during the entire stay in Fukuoka.
  4. Insurance covering injury and illness during the entire trip (excluding dental and pre-existing conditions).

A fee will be payable to the APCC by each country to assist with the costs of the convention. AJSV also charges a participation fee for selected children to cover uniform, administration and camp fees. The participation fee for each child is $500 payable on acceptance of selection. Spending money is limited to ¥10,000 (approx. $115-$120) and is additional to the participation fee.

Please note – as Japan requires three Covid vaccinations, it will be necessary for each participant to pay for and undertake a pre-travel PCR test (or consult with a doctor regarding a third booster) – this is not covered by APCC or the participation fee and is approximately $150.

As a guide, the total cost for the trip is likely to be around $770 plus a passport if required.

The selection process to choose the four children who will attend the BRIDGE Summer Camp will consist of the following stages:

  1. The Society will consider all applications received and a shortlist will be created.

  1. Short-listed applicants will be invited to attend a selection day and interview on Sunday, 5th March 2023 at a metropolitan location.

Please ensure that you are available on the date mentioned above as no alternative dates are available.

Four orientation meetings will be held for the group prior to departure in July and attendance is compulsory.  These meetings will be generally held at a metropolitan location and will be held on:

Friday 17th March 2023 (online)                                                     Sunday 30th April 2023

Saturday 3rd June 2023 (usually sleepover meeting)              Sunday 9th July 2023
