Science Challenge Team thanks ALL our SPONSORS!

Our Science Challenge team left Tassie this week to fly over to Western Australia for the finals on Friday.  A HUGE thank you to all our Science Challenge Team Sponsors who have blessed us greatly with their words of encouragement, prayers and financial support.  We didn't get to personally thank all of sponsors individually on our Facebook feed but our team sincerely appreciates the support from Vos Construction, UTAS, Anderson Morgan, Tas Alkaloids, Tasmania Coachlines, Atkins Removals, Melburn Auto, Foot & Playsted, West Tamar Council, Launceston City Council and Real Beef.  As you can see from the pictures below, our team are enjoying their time already in WA.

A BIG thank you to Mrs Lawes, Mr Bain and Mrs Boyle for how they have taught, mentored and supported our student team this year.  Not only do they keep the momentum of competing up throughout the year they also organise a number of fundraising events to help our team get to the finals.  Lots of extra work that LCS is very thankful for.

2020 Middle School Staffing Update

LCS would like to introduce our new Head of Middle School in 2020, Mr Rohan Kew.  Rohan, pictured with his wife Jenni, will be moving to LCS from Heritage Christian School, NSW and has over 20 years experience as a Teacher, Head of School and Deputy Principal in Australian Christian Schools.

Congratulations also to Mrs Bonnie Armstrong who will be supporting Rohan next year as our new Assistant Head of Middle School. Our sincere thanks to current Head of Middle School, Mr Richard Sansom (leaving LCS at the end of 2019) and Assistant Head of Middle School Mrs Julie Ferguson, for their wonderful contribution and faithful service in these roles over the past three years.

First Day of Term 4 was full of smiles

The first day of Term 4 was a beautiful sunny day and it was great to see that most students were glad to be back -  there were lots of smiles and giggles as the school routine began again.  We visited some of our Junior classes including Mrs Russell's Kinder class to enjoy a few snippets of the day!  It's always a joy to see the smiles of our happy students at LCS.

New Improvements at school

During the October school holidays many improvements around our school grounds were being worked on.  Our Year 8 & 9 locker room got a quick makeover with an internal wall being removed and new paint on the walls - there will be more items like tables and chairs arriving in this area soon to surprise our students.  Our Junior toilet block was finished and in use on the first day of Term 4.  Also in the background, the textiles classroom, Mrs Beattie's Year 1 classroom and the Middle School Art room had some renovations with more to come.    To top it off, we also had the installation of solar panels on to our gym roof during the holidays.   A lot is happening and more will be revealed soon as plans proceed.

Young Tasmanian Writers Award Winner at LCS

Congratulations to Year 9 student Alice Socorro who has won first place in the 2019 Young Tasmanian Writers Prize – Junior Section. This is a short fiction competition open to all Tasmanians enrolled in Years 7-12 run by Forty South Publishing, in partnership with the Tasmanian Association for the Teaching of English. Entries are judged by published authors and her story was awarded the first prize by Tasmanian children’s book writer Julie Hunt. Alice's story won a prize of $300 and will be published in the December 2019 issue of Tasmania 40°South.  Well done and what a great achievement!

Junior Athletics - Barrow wins the day!

Last week our Junior school had their Year 3 - 6 Athletics Carnival.  Despite the sporadic rain and cold winds our students persevered and had a great time competing at St Leonards Athletics grounds.  The competition was on to the very last race and Barrow finally won the day! Well done to everyone for their great participation and team spirit shown and thank you to all our parents and friends that came to support our day.

Life Skills Cafe

This week our Life Skills students hosted a Cafe in their unit, providing a mouthwatering morning tea. LCS staff were invited to attend - they were greeted with a friendly welcome at the door and everyone who attended had a wonderful time. Their cafe was full and the scones went very quickly as did the scrumptious custard creme biscuits. Thank you to Life Skills for hosting a wonderful morning tea! Our staff were very appreciative of your awesome effort and a few want the recipe to the custard creme biscuits. Yum!

Lids for Kids

We've had a great response to the Lids for Kids venture being run by Life Skills.  Some of our students will start to count how many lids have been collected soon, so we hope to bring you a grand total later this term.

Please continue to drop your lids into our office - we still need them!

As part of their Connecting to the Community Curriculum, Life Skills needs milk bottle tops, soft drink tops and flat water-based tops so they can be recycled and used to make prosthetic hands for children in need.  This project is run by Envision Hands, which is a not-for-profit community initiative that uses 3D printing to turn plastic waste into mechanical hands and arms for kids, with the products being sent around the world.  They report that over one million bottle tops have been collected so far, so let's add to that through your donations which can be dropped off at our school office.  For more information, check out the article below.
