Remembering our Why

This Saturday I attended the Girls on the Run coach training. It was a fun time where we got to meet fellow coaches from different walks of life. Some were parents, teachers, and teachers aides while others were from completely different fields such as business. There was an opening activity that we learned about, which helped me reflect on my own “Why”. It was a simple question, “When you were you little what did you want to be when you grew up?”

Ever since I was a little girl, around Kindergarten, I wanted to become a teacher. This was most likely due to a couple of reasons. The biggest reason being that my mom was a teacher’s aide and I had a chance to go to work with her during the summers, and anytime I had a day off of school, while my brother and sister went to the babysitter. I loved going with her to work and helping her make things for her Kindergarten students. I enjoyed spending alone time with her, away from my siblings, and seeing her in her element. Her coworkers would ask me, “You are Ana’s daughter? She is so good with the students and we love working with her.” I hadn’t thought about this in a very long time but thinking about it brought back very fond memories and feelings about being in an elementary school.

What is your “Why”? What inspired you to work at a school, become an educator, campus monitor, counselor, office manager, etc? Take a few minutes this week to reconnect with someone and dig into your why. Connection and our whys are what help us show up for our kids, even during our most challenging days.

Let’s keep these thoughts at the forefront as we go into the weeks and months to come. :)
