Equity in Our Classrooms

We often talk about equity here at aspire, but what does it really mean in our classrooms? Building a more equitable educational environment is about student empowerment: making sure all students have what they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond. This includes students in Special Education, English Language Learners (ELLs), Gifted and Talented, and other students with diverse educational needs. At times as educators, we are conflicted with the idea that we are not doing enough with some students while we are spending so much time with others. I know, I for one have felt this way multiple times. However, we have to remember that we are providing the supports that all our students need.  Nevertheless, we should still challenge ourselves to ensure that we provided resources and access for our higher achieving students as well who struggle to be engaged with the general curriculum because they already have mastery of the material. Below is an article discussing what equity is in education, what it means, and why it matters.
