Miss Sorbello Phillipines Immersion
Best wishes to Miss Sorbello who is travelling to Cebu, Phillipines, with a group of 17 teachers from the Sandhurst Diocese. This immersion trip provides Miss Sorbello with the experience of helping and teaching within the Cebu community.
Miss Sorbello leaves today and is away for the first week of the school holidays. With money raised from the BBQ's during Parent Teacher Interviews, Mr Woodwards Movie day and a donation from Social Justice, Miss Sorbello is able to take a wonderful donation of just over $2000 for the children of Cebu. Chatter Matters
Term 3 Language genres/ communicating for different social purposes
The following activities will help students make necessary adjustments to language to communicate in varied situations eg; to tell stories, recount events, persuade, give instructions and report information. These activities may help support not only the child’s oral language but written language development also.
4. The art of persuasion.
Show your child how to become more aware of the persuasive devices used by advertising companies. As you drive around notice and discuss the ads on various boards and signage. You could also look through the junk mail and catalogues. Focus on the words or images that influence you most. Would you buy this product why or why not?
5. Communicating to socialise
We all use a particular style when we email or use the internet to access social media but are our children explicitly aware of these styles. How can they adjust their language/style to get more out of their interactions with others?
Ask your child to tell you they might write an email to the following people about a recent holiday. Grandma, their best friend, the school principal, a prep student, the school magazine. What sort of words, phrases do they use for each of these different audience? Why?
Ask them to comment on this meme as if they were texting it to the same people above.
6. Narrative
Aim to read one book a day with your child (repeating books is OK!). It is important that during reading, you begin to take turns in talking about what is happening in the pictures and ask your child questions that focus on the elements of the story. Use the following questions to help:
- Who is in the story? Where are they? When is the story happening?
- What was the problem?
- How did the characters feel?
- What did the characters decide to do?
- What happened next? What was the solution?
- How will the story end?
Some fabulous books that you might want to find/ borrow to read with your child include:
7. When your child brings home pictures from school that they have drawn, make up a story to go with it. Try to include the seven parts of the story (Setting, Problem, Feelings, Plan, Action, Solution, End).
