Deena Harding Visit

On the 18th of September 2007 MSC graduate Dr Deena Harding BSc BVMS came to speak to our year 12 Dream Catchers. Deena is currently a Veterinarian working here in Victoria after many years of study, hard work and determination.  The students were inspired and amazed by her incredible story and work ethic, especially going into their final exams.

We thank you Deena for the lasting impression you have left on our students and you are more than welcome to come back to inspire more and more generations of MSC students to come!

Alumni Speech Crystal Scott at the Valedictory Dinner

Hello class of 2019, I’d like to start by saying Congratulation’s; you made it!

It gives me great pleasure to be here tonight, and what an honour it is being able to celebrate with you all.

It has been 10+ years since I attended my Valedictory and what can I say other than it certainly has been a ride. I am a mum of three beautiful children, and I married my best friend. My husband is truly my number one supporter, we have been together 10 years and he has held my hand through all our up’s and downs as I held his. He is such a great man, so great that he even let me come and celebrate here with you all on his birthday.

I’d like to say it is all rainbows and sunshine once you graduate, but that would be a lie. Life has a way of throwing a few storms your way, some more difficult and scary then others. But like they say when the rain stops and the clouds disappear the rainbow shines once again. It’s how we choose to survive these storms that really matter. Our choices in life dictate our future and pave the way of our journey.

For me I survived my share of bad storms, from broken relationships, losing loved ones, and even putting aside my dreams to take care of other’s needs. This would be one of my hardest lessons I have learnt while growing up. Learning to say no and put myself first. This is never easy and much easier said than done. However, it is not impossible. It takes will power, determination, confidence and self-acceptance. After all if you do not believe you are worth more than you will always be doing for others, putting everyone else’s desires before your own.

If I could give you one piece of advice tonight that would be to never give up on YOUR dream.

This is so important, and why this college uses it in their moto, Dare to Dream!

Let’s imagine for a moment that you are standing on a tight rope and you are about to walk from one side to the other. Your teachers, parent’s guardians and friends are your safety equipment and your education has given you the necessary tools and knowledge to begin your journey across. You are about to take your first step out on your own but fear grips you, you begin to feel anxious  and overwhelmed regardless of all your safety precautions.

What I want you to do is stop, breath and remember something very important, you are safe, you are loved, you are worth it, you are strong and you have a dream.

This dream is what is going to drive you and encourage you. This dream is what gives you a purpose. You got this!

It is possible to achieve anything you wish, all you have to do is never give up on yourself. Don’t let your limitations, lack of knowledge or experience tell you otherwise.

I know this as I am now a published author and Illustrator yet, through school, I couldn’t spell, I struggled to read and I failed Maths. My first year of high school I couldn’t even spell my last name. No matter how hard I tried in the end my enter score was frighteningly very low and I had no way to enter into big league universities.

This was shattering to me and my dream. However, I refused to give up, I refused to let this stop me from doing what I love, what I believe I was born to do. No instead I continued study through Tafe and learnt the necessary skills I needed to achieve my dream. It took me longer, and was much harder than I could ever have imagined but I never gave in.

If I couldn’t do something, I would research how to do it, and now I never pass down a great opportunity.

Do you know why?

Because, I Dared to dream, and now I am living my Dream.

My teachers were so important to me, Gene, Jim and so many more are what made my experience through this college so rewarding, because they believed in me, they never gave up and they were my safety equipment holding me up, supporting me as I began my journey across my life’s tight rope.

I’d like to share this quote with you, written by my mother in law Judy Cox.

“Fear is both a positive and negative influence in one’s journey, either way what lies ahead will never be known until a choice is made. So remember, Endurance maintains momentum, Belief provides hope and Unconditional love overcomes fear.”

Thank you so much for having me here tonight and allowing me to share my journey with you.

I wish you all the very best and remember,

Dare to Dream!

Believe in yourself!

You got this!

Thank you!
