Monash Champions
Mornington Secondary College students have had a long standing tradition of opportunities in the Monash Champion Year 9 & 10 program. This year’s teams comprised of, Year 9 students: Tara Singh, Kai Titcher and Ethan Williams and Year 10 students: Connor Algie, Angus O’Shea, Ryan Howarth, Taleah Cameron stepped up to the challenge. They attended weekly lunch time and after school meetings with their Monash Mentors. Their hard work and creativity, with projects focused on betterment of student experience at school, culminated with a presentation of their interesting projects to all other participating schools in the program. Our students’ visions were very creative and inspiring. We are very proud of the 2019 student teams and look forward to their ideas being implemented on our campus in the near future.

After finishing last year's Monash Champions it was evident that we would do it again... and here we are. This year's project could not have been better. Not only was the end result, something we named 'Brightening up the School', a big plus for our school, but we had so much fun doing it. Shortly after starting the project we all attended the overnight camp at Mannix College. This was a highlight for all, and most remembered by the yoga we all participated in (with varying ability) after a night in the dorms. While this camp was a fabulous experience, my personal favourite part of the entire project was presentation day. Personally I believe we were the best group but hey that's just me... and the rest of our group... and our mentors. No bias of course. We all spoke remarkably well while explaining our project and felt amazing after speaking to the crowd. I know I speak for everyone when I say we'd love to do it all again.

The Monash Champions program has been an absolute delight to be a part of. The two, one year programs allowed my colleagues and I to develop and evolve our leadership, project management and communication skills. Both years of the program allowed us to create projects that maintain lasting change and for the latter project, allowed us to truly make an impact in our school's environment. Everyone in our group loved working together to create change and positive vibes in our school. The design brief we made is to create a more inclusive, uplifting, inspirational environment and culture of the School. We want to create engaging spaces around the school as well as create opportunities for others to participate in creating these spaces. I'm so happy with what we've completed, and we all had so much fun doing it.

Monash Champions has been an experience to remember, after completing year 9 and now year 10 as well. The whole program has been helpful towards developing skills in leadership, confidence and teamwork. During this years year 10 program we created a project to help benefit the school's mental health. We called it 'Brightening up our school'. The idea was to create art murals around the school with other students contributing. On these days, we planned live music and things like sausage sizzles to go alongside the events. As part of this camp, we were invited to stay the night at Monash, Clayton Campus, in Mannix College. This was the highlight of the program for anyone taking part. On this camp, we took part in normal campus activities as well as listening to speeches and other speakers all regarding leadership. The best part of the camp would have been the Trivia we did on the night. We were split into groups without people from our school so we were forced to make new friends. The whole program was great fun, and I would recommend it to any year 9 or 10 student leader.
