Barrier PSSA Blues Dinner
On Friday 22nd November, five Burke Ward students attended the annual Barrier PSSA Blues Dinner at the South Football Club.
Ex-BWPS student, Meg Butcher was the guest speaker for the event, and did a wonderful job outlining her accomplishments in sport since she has left primary school.
Abbey Butcher: President's Commendation for Basketball
Abbey was a standout player during the PSSA Basketball Carnival who could always be relied upon to get the ball from one end of the court to the other, again after again, whether it be attacking or from a turnover in defense at the other end. Abbey consistently defended her opponents and was able to secure many rebounds underneath the basket. Her dribbling skills and fast breaks from the back of the court saw her being one of the main ball carriers in every game over the three days. Her dogged attitude and determination created many opportunities for her to score. Sometimes it was as if she was running straight through a brick wall, due to the tough defense from the opposition but she didn’t let this deter her, she would draw the foul and be awarded two shots, which would nearly always go in.
Abbey was committed to supporting her teammates through encouraging words both off and on the court. Her experience in attending last year’s carnival held her in good stead to know what we were going to be up against. Abbey never gave up and was 100% committed to doing the very best she could time and time again. Well done Abbey on these fantastic achievements!
Akira Stubing : nominated for the Geoff Goulding Barrier Spirit Award
Akira was always positive at training and throughout the carnival. He would attend training and be willing to give anything a go. Akira always listened well and was willing to play any position on the field. He openly listens to feedback and applies it when he played. Despite the scores, Akira always played with a high spirit and highly deserving of this nomination.
Ebony Lithgow : nominated for the Geoff Goulding Barrier Spirit Award (and pronounced winner)
Ebony displayed all the qualities one would expect in a Barrier Basketball representative. High engagement and outstanding participation in all training sessions; dedication to improving her basketball skills, especially pivoting and ripping the ball to keep it safe from an opponent’s hand and the ability to listen to and consistently apply advice and direction from her coach.
On the court, Ebony played a pivotal role in defense because she listened to and followed the plan. She was able to play her part successfully as she knew her role in the team which was, dribble for two or three bounces, pass it off and defend like crazy. By defending in this manner, Ebony was able to, in many instances, create turnovers from the opposition which gave our team vital opportunities to attack and score. Whether we had lost or first game or our seventh, Ebony always played her heart out until the final siren sounded and this is to be commended.
