The Feast of Blessed Edmund Rice
It was a joyous occasion on Monday morning when as a community we came together to celebrate the feast of the patron of our school – Blessed Edmund Rice. It was an opportunity for all to remember the great and influential life of a most dedicated man. Students and staff alike heard about the intelligence of Edmund who realised very quickly that simply giving money to the poor youths of Waterford in Ireland was not a long term solution to the inequality he saw. Edmund Rice understood that to provide a holistic education liberated these boys from a life of poverty and destitution. He also understood that this task was far too much for one person to conquer and so gained the support and trust from other like-minded men who joined him as teachers, thus commencing the Christian Brothers.
Our assembly was also enlightened by our very own Br Carl Sherrin (the 166th Christian Brother to work at St Pius X College) who provided a deeper insight into Blessed Edmund Rice. We learnt that Edmund was an incredibly generous man who was open to God’s plan and calling in his life. Br Carl also elaborated upon the work of the Brothers today, including working in prisons as chaplains and volunteering to make wheelchairs for children in developing countries. All the young men of St Pius were encouraged to be open to God in their own lives, just as Edmund Rice was in his life. Our assembly was fittingly concluded by singing the Anthem to Edmund Rice.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank Br Carl for his input along with Ms Waters, Oliver Lenehan of Year 11 and the choir for their accompaniment to the morning.
