PRAYER:  Edmund Rice opened his heart to Christ.  With this in mind we pray

God of love,

You lead us on life’s journey.

As we gather here in Your name,

Open our minds to know Your voice.

Open our hands to do Your work.

And open our hearts to hold Your Spirit.

Amen

THIS WEEK

Founder's Day Assembly:   On Monday the College held a Founder's Day Assembly.  Brother Carl spoke about Edmund Rice and how the Edmund Rice charism is at work today.  He told the boys to be open to the will of God.   We would probably all benefit by taking some time to be still in the presence of our God.

Mother's Day Stall:  Mrs Rajca told the boys about the ladies of Candela in Peru and the Mother’s Day stall.  The beauty of this stall is that it is a gift that gives twice.  If the boys buy a present and give it to mum, then all the money goes back to these ladies who are less fortunate than ourselves so two people benefit.  More information is available below, along with details of the Mother's Day events at the College.  I hope to have a chat with many of you at the morning tea following  Mass.

Reconciliation:  Two classes in Year 6 went to Reconciliation on Tuesday and the other two classes will also receive this sacrament over the next few weeks.

P&F Meeting next Monday night 13 May - 7.30pm in the Sarto Centre.  All are welcome - please see the P&F Page for details.

Year 5 Excursion to The Rocks:  We were fortunate with the weather in that it only rained lightly when we were moving outside.  The boys attended the Big Dig where they were amateur archaeologists and found out about a lot of convicts named George.  You may wish to ask them if they know why there were a lot of 'Georges' at this time!  After we learnt about life at The Rocks and the Black Plague, we became amateur archaeologists and had to observe real artefacts.  We then did an actual dig so as to understand how archaeologists work before moving up to the Observatory for a fascinating insight into the planets, rotation of the moon and my favourite - the Planetarium.  The boys were well behaved and hopefully had a very fulfilling educational experience.

MOTHER'S DAY

We have two Mother’s Day celebrations in the College this Friday 10 May:

  • All Mothers, Grandmothers and Carers are invited with their sons to an early morning liturgy in the School Gymnasium followed by a morning tea.  Refreshments will be available from 7.30am and the liturgy commences at 8.00am.  For catering purposes please RSVP via  https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=132872&
  • At 10.30 am there will also be a Mother’s Day Mass in Our Lady of Dolours (OLD) church for all the Junior School Mothers and Grandmothers.  After this service we will have a late morning tea in the playground and we will have a very special Mother’s Day stall if your son wishes to buy something for you, or you could purchase it together (which might be a safer option).  If you are coming to the Junior School Mother’s Day Mass could you please RSVP via this link for catering purposes:  https://www.trybooking.com/499576

Mother's Day Stall - Candela Mission PeruMrs Mary Rajca visited the College on Monday 6 May to speak to the students about the work of the Sisters of Mercy in the shanty town of Candela in Lima Peru.   The mission  supports women through a program that teaches them to make  beautiful handicrafts.  The proceeds from the sale of these crafts give the women an income so they can provide for their families.

There will be a sale of the beautiful handicrafts that the women have made on Friday 10 May just after the Junior School Mother's Day Mass and morning tea. This is a significant way for the boys  to help the mothers of Candela and at the same time purchase a beautifully handmade gift for their own Mothers and Grandmothers.

All money raised goes back to the women who have made the goods. This money is used by the mothers in Candela to buy basic necessities for their families.

Your support of the mission is greatly appreciated.

Literature Promotion in the JRC

This week Year 5 enjoyed listening to the story of Midnight – This is the story from WWI of Guy Haydon and his horse, Midnight, as they enlist with the army, travel across the world and play a starring role in a great cavalry charge. PRC ID: 5873.

STAR WARS DAY was celebrated on MAY the 4TH.

'May the force be with you' is a phrase used in the STAR WARS movies to wish an individual or group good luck or goodwill. The Force is a mystical power created by all living things ... [that] binds the galaxy together." Through training and meditation, those whom "the Force is strong with" are able to perform various superpowers (such as telekinesis, precognition, telepathy).

Two major knighthood orders are at conflict with each other:  the Jedi, who act on the light side of the Force through non-attachment and arbitration and the Sith, who use the dark side by manipulating fear and aggression.  The Star Wars series turn 40 on May 25. Come into the JRC  and browse our large collection of Star Wars Books.#starwars

Mrs Martin’s Book Trail:  The Little Wave by Pip Harry.

Pip Harry is one of my favourite YA authors. I was interested to read this verse novel, her first middle grade novel. Told through the eyes of three children, Noah, Lottie and Jack, it is about the dynamics that occur when a Sydney school hosts children from a visiting country school. It’s beautifully told and explores themes of friendship, family, grief, bullying and acceptance.  #Mrs Martinsbooktrail2019
