Principal's Report

Alan Devine -  Acting College Principal

Term two update

Term two is typically a busy term for student assessments and surveys. This term we have held NAPLAN for Years 7 and 9, Years 7-12 Student Attitudes to School Survey, Year 12 General Assessment Test (GAT) and our end of semester exams for Years 9 to 11. The Year 12 English exam will be held on Thursday, 27 June. All this is in addition to the ongoing assessments throughout the semester. The assessment results will be published to parents in the Semester reports.

We have had several students from Year 10 and 11 out on work experience this term. Many are placed in businesses in the local township and it is great to hear their stories and experiences about the placement.  It is great to see our students gaining the experience they need for life after school but also working within our own Melton community.

To finish off the semester, the Year 12 formal will be held on Friday, 28 June . Our Year 12's need a ‘small’ celebration during this crucial year!

Year 9 Careers

The Year 9 Careers Morrisby Test was organised for the last few weeks of the term. Year 9 students who returned permission forms were able to go online and complete the 1 hour test. The test presents Year 9 students with several questions about likes/dislikes as well as cognitive tests. The final outcome is a document which suggests potential careers pathways for them. The students will receive a detailed document from their assessment and in term three each student will receive a 30 minute career counselling session from external qualified career counsellors.

Annual Implementation Plan

The College Leadership Team are currently working through the 6 month AIP progress check. Signs are positive and indicate, that at the half way mark, improvements are occurring with work still to continue in the second half of the school year.

Principal Class update

During this term Assistant Principal, Andree Poulter  who had worked at MSC for five years began a new position as Student Achievement Manager in the Department's Footscray office. We thank Andree for all her work in helping the school and our wider community and wish her all the best in her new role.

Mr Reynolds, who is currently on Long Service Leave will be returning at the start of Term 3. I will be taking Long Service Leave in Term 3 and will be returning in week 5.

Parents are Critical Partners in knowing their child's learning

It is acknowledged that many of our families are busy with work, study, sporting activities etc and it is often difficult to find time to discuss what has happened during the day. We encourage you to connect with your child's learning by taking every opportunity to discuss it with them, eg driving in the car, over the dinner table.

Examples of questions you may ask are:

  • What did you learn today?
  • How did you do?
  • What did you do if you didn't understand?
  • How can you improve on your learning?
  • What are you most proud of?

These conversations will give you valuable information on how your child is feeling about their learning and school in general.

Parent Opinion Survey

In August we will be inviting randomly selected families to complete the annual Parent Opinion Survey. The survey is an initiative of the Department. If your family is chosen we encourage you to complete the online survey by the due date, as the information provided to us assists in planning the future direction of the College.

We Need You!

Opportunity to join School Council

We currently have several casual vacancies on School Council. We are looking for interested parents who would like to contribute to the decision making at the College. Please contact Virginia Mitchell at the College on 9743 3322 if you would like more information.

Finally, on behalf of the staff I would like to wish everyone an enjoyable, safe and relaxing holiday break.
