Junior School

This week, Stage 2 students had a great History and Geography excursion to Penrith Lakes. They explored how places change over time to meet the needs of people. This was one of those lovely opportunities for students from both Springwood and Wentworth Falls to learn together. All students had a wonderful time and the children were commended for their beautiful behavior.

Our debating team won another debate this week and Mrs Spohr is so impressed with how they are all learning and growing. Their skills have developed significantly since they began their debating journey in Term 1 and we are continuously impressed with their efforts.

Our “Kids Lit Quiz” team will head off to Bathurst with Dr Drew and myself on Monday to represent our school in the regional competition. Thank you to Dr Drew for helping the children prepare for this wonderful opportunity. Dr Drew is simultaneously getting started on “Tournament of the Minds” preparation too, and we are so grateful for her expertise.

All of our students are in final preparations for “Joseph”. I visited rehearsals on Sunday and it gave me a taste of what the audiences can expect! With all children across both campuses involved at some level – it’s going to be a huge show! Staff are working so hard to help the children prepare, and the work of the students themselves is amazing. I look forward to see you all there!

And in amongst all of these exciting activities, children are still getting on with learning and playing. It’s wonderful to tour our classrooms and see curious and imaginative children, confidently asking questions. They collaborate with their peers and tackle projects in small groups. They listen to the ideas and opinions of others, and have their own perspectives challenged. Small children learn new sounds and put them together and over and over again they practice…..and yes! They are reading, when less than six months ago they couldn’t!

The work of our Junior School teachers every single day of the week is outstanding. We have such dedicated teachers who care deeply for your children and work hard to give them every opportunity to grow and learn. The Junior School is certainly an inspiring place to be.

Stage 2 Penrith Lakes Excursion

On Tuesday, 31st May, the Stage 2 students from Springwood and Wentworth Falls campuses travelled to Penrith Lakes Environmental Education Centre to participate in a 'hands on' experience that provided them with opportunities to investigate change over time in the Penrith Lakes area of Sydney, local heritage and the impacts of various eras of human occupancy. The program used the story of a Stage 2 student, Tessa, who is asked by her teacher in investigate a family heritage item. The investigation of a piece of glass, uncovered much more than Tessa ever imagined.

The children had a fabulous time exploring the Castlereagh area to uncover evidence of changes that had occurred and why those changes had occurred. We heard about how the Aboriginal people used the land for farming and ceremonies, how the people of the First Fleet changed the land to help them to construct buildings and roads by using stones and gravel from the local quarry, and how the quarry was then turned into a wetland ecosystem for the whole community to enjoy.

As always, the children participated in the program with great enthusiasm and were polite and respectful. We had a fabulous day out and hopefully our excursion will inspire the children to go back to Penrith Lakes for a closer look.

Basketball Report - Term 2, Week 6

On Monday, 30th May, BMGS Swish played the ‘Impossible Shots’ for a convincing victory. The Swish’s defence had four consecutive stops in the opposition’s backcourt to take over the game in the first half. This victory brings the Swish into the Top 4 in the competition.

On Tuesday, 31st May, the BMGS Stars continued to build on their skills as awesome basketballers. They played a fantastic game of ‘stuck in the mud’ in their skill building session, using basketballs, which we will definitely take to our next training session on Friday. Our mini games were challenging and had our team having to pull out all the stops to try and score. This week, the team had to work really hard to try and limit the goals from the opposition. Christian McHugh, Madeleine Russell, Emily Hyslop and Sebastian Nicholls managed to steal the ball on more than one occasion. We definitely need to build on our shooting skills as there were a number of shots but not many goals went in this week. Sebastian was our only goal scorer this week and the whole team deserve to feel really proud of how they played and conducted themselves on the court.
