From the Head of Sport

This weekend looks to be a full weekend of sport. Please ensure that you are dressed in only BMGS gear when you are attending sport and representing the School.

Students who live at Blackheath are reminded that there will be one bus on Saturday morning that picks up from Blackheath to bring these students to BMGS to meet their connecting bus.

Congratulations

Zara Nicholas (Year 8) has received some very exciting news this week as she has been selected to attend the Little Athletics Australia National Camp to be held on the Gold Coast in October.  Zara has been selected due to her outstanding 1st place result in the LANSW State Combined Events (Heptathlon). At the camp, Zara's Combined Events' group will be coached by Glynis Nunn (Australia's Heptathlon Gold Medal winner at the LA Olympics in 1984). This is an incredible opportunity for Zara who will train alongside the best U14 athletes in the country. We wish her all the very best whilst she is in camp.

Orienteering

Last Friday there were 27 students who came along to trial the sport of Orienteering. It was a very successful afternoon and we are looking forward to even more participants this Friday afternoon.  If you are interested in getting to know how this sport works then bring your sports gear and be changed and ready to go at the roundabout at 3:15pm. BMGS is seeking to enter a team in the NSW All Schools Orienteering event to be held on the 12th August 2022.  Come along and have your skills tested in this exciting new co-curricular activity.

Mountain Biking

Are you an expert mountain biker? Come and see me in my office.  I have received a few names regarding this event, however, we need more participants to make teams in the relevant divisions!

The 14th NSW All Schools XC MTB Championship will be sponsored by JetBlack Products (www.jetblackproducts.com), presented by WSMTB Club. The aim is to further encourage MTB participation in all NSW schools by holding a Cross Country MTB race for high school teams.

The race will be a 4-hour team’s event. The Senior, (Mixed & Female), Intermediate and Junior laps will take about 15 minutes. The Senior(Male) lap will be slightly longer and take about 20 minutes.

The team with the most number of laps completed in the 4 hours will be the winner. There will be points awarded for participation and category results to determine the NSW All Schools XC MTB Champion.

Teams will consist of 3 or 4 riders from the same school.  There will be Male, Female and Mixed categories in each of the 3 divisions*:

Senior :              Years 11 and 12

Intermediate :   Years 9 and 10

Junior :                 Years 7 and 8

Athletics Carnival

The BMGS Athletics Carnival will be held at Glenbrook Oval on 16th June. As was the cast with the Swimming Carnival earlier this year, students will be required to make their own way to Glenbrook. Members of our wonderful BMGS P & F Association will be running a fundraiser on the day so will have lunch, drinks and snacks available throughout the day.

Please come and see me in my office if you have any questions regarding upcoming sporting events.

Girls' Football

BMGS Junior Girls Football defeated Redlands, 2-1

The Junior girls had their work cut out for them in this week’s match, and were clearly meeting an experienced Redlands team. With both teams held goalless at half time, it was a stressful second half for the girls having to dominate the attack to keep Redlands from scoring. It was a tense final quarter after Redlands scored a breakthrough goal with about ten minutes left in the game, however the Junior girls quickly responded with a goal from Ashlee. Lia followed with another goal only a few minutes later. Our defence once again put on a commendable effort throughout the dying minutes to prevent another Redlands goal. Congratulations on another fantastic win!

BMGS First XI Girls were defeated St Andrew's Cathedral School, 3-0

The First XI girls played a rough game last weekend. Going into this game, we understood that we would be playing a very skilled team and, as they have won all of their games with 6+ goals,  we all needed to be on our "A-game". Sadly, within the first minute a very easy goal was scored against us, thankfully waking everyone up for the rest of the game. Throughout the rest of the first half, we played extremely defensively, trying our best to stop any opportunity at goal, but unfortunately they managed to score another two goals, ending the first half with a 3-0 advantage. As we came back on the field for the second half, we wanted to improve our communication and space between players so we could then improve our passing and through balls.  The second half was much stronger than the first as our defense and mids worked together to stop the opposition from scoring. As SACS have never won a game with a low score, we were pleased with the result and the way we played. We will be reflecting on our game to improve further, and hopefully have a more eventful game this weekend against Redlands. Well played, girls!
