Head of Middle Years

Mr Steven Tkaczuk

Students across our sub-school continue to be immersed in varying activities across the broad range of subject areas. It is both exciting and encouraging to observe the way many have approached inquiry, applying a broad scope of Learner profile attributes to engage in their learning.

As we begin to think about the 2023 year, students in Years 8 and 9 will have the opportunity to learn about, and choose, the broad range of electives. These will be presented formally to the students in Week 9 of this Term. Additionally, discussions around student pathways into VCE will form part of the discussion. Coupled with this, students in Year 9 have been invited to an online ‘Morrisby Report’ information session on Monday 20 June. The Morrisby Report is essentially a method for collecting information on individual aptitudes (strengths) career interests, values, personality type and skills. Once the report has been completed by each individual, the collated information is used to generate career and study suggestions. This helps form fruitful and beneficial conversations between students, their parents and the College.

Finally, we’d like to thank you for working closely with the College for the benefits of your child. We wish you all a wonderful mid-year break and look forward to the commencement of Term 3 which begins with our Year 6 cohort travelling to Canberra to extend their learning of Australian Law making and Democracy. We look forward to sharing their experience with you!

Student Learning

Year 7 Drama with Ms Davis

The Year 7 students have worked hard to refine their dramatics skills across a variety of styles. Beginning the Semester with a theatre review, followed by educational puppet plays that were performed to the Junior Years and to finish, Melodrama! In small groups, students created comedic, melodramatic scripts to be filmed and edited. Not an easy feat combining digital skills learnt during the lockdowns and practical skills within the Drama room! However, Year 7  students have gone above and beyond creating original and entertaining dramatic pieces of theatre.

Students across our sub-school continue to be immersed in varying activities across the broad range of subject areas. It is both exciting and encouraging to observe the way many have approached inquiry, applying a broad scope of Learner profile attributes to engage in their learning.

Year 7 Science with Mrs Nair

Is chemistry a mix-up?  The Year 7's wanted to explore this question and this unit helped us separate fact from fiction, when it came to mixtures and pure substances. We learned all about the different types of mixtures and the components that make up a solution. This further helped us crystallise how different types of mixtures can be separated using their physical properties.

Education Perfect Competition

Year 7 science students recently participated in the Sustainable Oceans Competition and came second in Australia. As students were competing, they learned a lot about the importance of taking care of our oceans. The ocean is our planet’s chief climate regulator. Recent data, from UN-sponsored research, shows that seaweed accounts for 54% of the world’s oxygen production, and without the ocean, we could not survive.

Shout out awards

Every week the Year 7 students give a shout-out to fellow students during their assembly. This invigorates the feeling of mutual respect and appreciation.

Year 7 Humanities with Ms Brough

In Humanities, the Year 7 students have been learning about History Mysteries, Ancient Civilizations, and the impact they have on the modern world. The students have been conducting their own research and presenting their findings from their chosen eras. They have been given the freedom to explore different forms of presentations.

Mathematics with Mr Kumar

Year 8’s recently completed a task demonstrating their understanding of the real-life application of Pythagoras's theorem. Students have now moved to Geometric reasoning. This includes knowing the meaning of the term's transformation, translation, reflection, rotation, dilation, and symmetry – essentially, congruence in short!

The Year 6's completed a task demonstrating their understanding of fractions. They calculated the ingredients required for a special recipe to feed their entire class. Students are now learning about the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals. That also includes understanding the power of 10 in multiplication and division.

Science with Mr Ahmad

In Term 2 the Year 8 Science classes have started on their Biology topic. They have explored the inside of our body which started with cells and continued on to different systems within our body. The Year 8's were lucky enough to even complete a dissection on a sheep’s pluck. It was great to see them hands-on and using different tools to observe the inside of different organs. No doubt we may have some Veterinarian’s or Surgeons in our midst!
