It is hard to believe that we have nearly reached the end of Term 2 and the students have almost completed half of their first year of school.

MATHS

Over the past couple of weeks, Foundation students have been exploring the concept of Addition and Subtraction. They have been learning the mathematical symbols that we use when we are completing addition and subtraction equations, and that the = symbol tells us the answer after it.

When exploring Addition, students have been completing fun, hands-on activities including rolling dice and using concrete materials to investigate the concept of how to add two groups of objects and numbers together. In pairs they used ladybirds to help them add two groups of spots and then wrote the corresponding equation.

When learning about Subtraction, the Foundation students used unifix blocks to race each other. They took turns to roll a dice to get the amount to take away, counted the total amount they had remaining and then wrote the subtraction equation using the appropriate symbols. They then wrote the corresponding subtraction equation. They also played a subtraction board game together.

INQUIRY

This Term we have been investigating Science. We have learnt that we are all Scientists and that Science is all around us. Students have participated in several experiments throughout the term and have followed the scientific method of making predictions and observing outcomes. We have had fun learning what happens when we combine;

borax and water together to make crystals, egg and vinegar to make the egg swell and get bouncy, and Coke and Mentos to cause an explosion!

CHEMICAL CHOAS INCURSION

On Wednesday the Foundation students attended the Chemistry Chaos Incursion led by the wonderful presenter, Sharon.

They had so much fun learning all about chemicals and that our world is made up of chemicals. They observed physical changes and chemical reactions.

We also investigated the properties of polymers; stretchy, hard, thirsty or soft.

We mixed two chemicals together to see what the physical change was - was it hard, soft, gassy or foamy?

They had the opportunity to learn through a variety of fun and engaging hands-on experiments, using scientific equipment to discover what happens when you mix two chemicals together!

TERM 3 EVENTS

Next term we have our school production ‘The Wizard of Oz’. The students have been working hard and practicing their dance moves in preparation for the big night. More information will be sent out regarding costume, tickets, performance nights will be sent home at the start of next term.

For the first four weeks of Term 3, Lisa will be away on a much anticipated trip up North. We wish her all the best for a fantastic time away with her family! During her absence, Natalie White will be teaching FB.

If you have any questions or concerns please email Holly Peters:
