THINGS TO KNOW

WHOLE SCHOOL ASSEMBLY@2:00PM
This Friday, we will all come together in the Barrbunin for our end-of-term assembly. Families are invited to join us on the deck (weather permitting), where we will open the bi-fold doors. At this stage, we will avoid families in the Barrbunin to allow our students to spread out. This feels a little surreal, as we have only just come back together in person last week and this week. The assembly will continue in the virtual world of Zoom for families wishing to remain at home.
NEW UNIFORM ITEM
Is your child forever losing their jackets and jumpers? Well, Eduthreads have the answer when they designed a new uniform item, which our School Council recently approved as part of the school's uniform policy. Melissa can assist you with sizing for the new Rugby top on Fridays. This is definitely a must-have winter item that will keep our students warm, without the need to remove jackets or jumpers
PREMIERS' READING CHALLENGE
The 2022 Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge is now open, so let's get reading Rippers. Parents can register from home or email Mrs. Rose, who can register your child/ren.
The PRC application offers a range of exciting features including:
- access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)
- a modern user-friendly interface
- rewarding students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved
- the option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review
The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 2 September 2022.
Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.
All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.
To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklist and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: https://www.vic.gov.au/premiers-reading-challenge
Foundation to Year 2
- Number of books: 30
- Number of books from the Challenge book list: 20 or more
Year 3 to Year 9
- Number of books: 15
- Number of books from the Challenge book list: 10 or more
What you can read
Most of the books you read should be from the Challenge book lists. The rest can be any book you choose.
You can read books on the book list for your year level or a level above and they'll count towards your Challenge total. You should check with your teachers or parents if you're not in years 9 or 10 and want to read a book from that list. This list includes titles for mature readers.
You can read a book from a level below your year level if your teacher agrees. You still need to read the number of books for your year level to meet the Challenge.

READING HELPERS PROGRAM - SEEKING PARENT VOLUNTEERS
Research has shown that parents who take an active role in their child’s school life increase their child’s ability to learn and have a positive effect on their social and emotional wellbeing as well as academic achievement.
At Ripponlea Primary School we encourage parents and carers to actively support student learning by becoming involved in a range of school and classroom based activities and greatly appreciate all community members who volunteer and support our programs, now that this is a possibility once again without restrictions.
Come along and learn basic skills and strategies in effectively helping small groups and individual children as they begin their literacy journey. While the knowledge and skills gained are valuable for supporting students in the classroom, it also provides insight into helping your own children at home.
STEP 1: All volunteers must have a WWC - Working with Children’s Check.
Your WWC must be on record at the office.
STEP 2: All volunteers must be triple vaccinated to come onsite to work with the children.
STEP 3: Register for training in the Reading Helpers program at RPS.
NB: It is a requirement to complete this course so that parents and carers can effectively support the classroom program from Foundation to Year 2.
NB: Registration for only one session is required.
Term 3 Dates:
- Friday 15 July 9:30 -10:30 am
- Monday 18 July 2:00-3:00 pm
