Careers Update

[Don't miss our announcement about the Headstart Program on the previous page of this newsletter. This is a great opportunity for students in Year 10 and 11 2021 who are interested in fast tracking their career or university aspirations by undertaking a School Based Apprenticeship & Training (SBAT) in a field of their choice.]

.................................................

Our focus in the BHHS Careers team this term has been to support our Year 12 students with their post-secondary decision making. Year 12 students have attended online meetings to discuss their options. They have been well prepared and are to be commended on their positive outlook given the unsettled year they have experienced. Remote learning has propelled our students into a different way of learning, where they have been required to step out of their comfort zones. The silver lining is that the richest learning happens outside of our comfort zone, and I am confident that our Year 12s will be well prepared to navigate their learning journey, beyond 2020.

News from Victoria University (VU)

Important changes to Bachelor of Nursing at VU

Victoria University is introducing the CASPer test (domestic students only) and an ATAR to the applications process for the Bachelor of Nursing for 2021 entry.  CASPer is a scenario-based test, designed to grade the ‘soft skills’ of applicants – their strengths and suitability for the profession. While VU is the first university in Australia to introduce CASPer for Nursing, it is following the success of universities in Canada and the US which use a similar test for pre-Nursing students.

Students are also reminded that besides the CASPer test, they must also meet the VCE requirements of: Units 1 and 2: satisfactory completion in two units (any study combination) of any Mathematics or Units 3 and 4: any Mathematics; Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL. Browse CASPer and also Preparing for CASPer and book a test at CASPer Test - Dates and Times.  Find out more about nursing at VU by browsing Bachelor of Nursing at VU.

Careers with STEM Hub

A great resource to explore all things STEM, can be found at CAREERS WITH STEM

WHAT IS IT?

The Careers with STEM hub is a student-focused website that includes surprising STEM careers pathways, insights into the future of work, hundreds of diverse STEM role models, teacher and students events, a back-catalogue of Careers with STEM magazines, student career quizzes, videos interviews and much more.

The aim is to inspire students about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, and we believe everyone should have access to and representation within STEM careers.

Why?

STEM jobs are growing 1.9 times faster than other jobs, yet enrolments in STEM degrees and courses are growing much more slowly, or even declining, especially for women and minorities.

STEM is a foundation not a destination.

STEM skills will underpin most jobs of the future, and they may not be what you think. Using the STEM + ‘X’ formula, where ‘X’ is your passion or an opportunity, you’ll discover how to connect technology with fashion, maths with sport, science with business, engineering with health outcomes and many more.

Careers with STEM catalogue of STEM influencers, expert writers and data-driven insights is a proven way to engage and inspire students, teachers and parents alike.

Please explore this rich resource, including webinars to register for, or head to “Careers with STEM on Demand” to listen to recordings of past webinars.

Happy Reading.

The Careers Team wish all students and families a safe and relaxing break.
