Principal's Report

‘Ability is what you are capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it’   - Lou Holtz

From the  moment  COVID-19 entered our lives, we’ve had to learn to deal with change, as each stage of the pandemic has changed the way we live, learn, work and socialise. It has caused much stress, many hardships and lifestyle adjustments.  Nevertheless, I hope that you are all finding some solace at the arrival of Spring - the warming temperatures and sunnier days are sure to boost our spirits somewhat.

The year so far has been completely turned on its head. The COVID-19 environment has impacted all of the landmark activities and events that are the highlights for students each term and often mark rites of passage for specific cohorts of students. Our ability to engage and connect as a school community has been severely affected by this virus.

However rather than focus on our losses we look to the silver linings in all of this – these have been plentiful. I have been inspired by the resilience, creativity, collaboration and positivity that has marked our student body and staff. The school values of respect, resilience, creativity and growth have never been more relevant or appropriate as they have been during this challenging year. Our regular onsite activities have been replaced by innovative, virtual celebrations, assemblies, year level challenges, competitions and collaborations. Students have participated respectfully in virtual classes, tutorials and meetings. They have learnt to consolidate their learning with feedback delivered through Microsoft Teams, Compass Learning Tasks and other digital applications.

We are also mindful that the continuing disruptions and changes will have caused significant anxiety for many students. As we begin to return on site in Term 4, our focus will be on reconnecting as a community and re-establishing relationships. It will also be a priority for us to ensure that we have a very clear picture of where each student is at in their learning, and what action we need to take to address any gaps, and to maintain challenge following online learning. Supporting our VCE students over the coming weeks and months ahead of their final examinations is a priority. All students are encouraged to keep connected with their peers, teachers, year level coordinators and the Wellbeing team. Accessing the advice and resources regularly posted on Teams and Compass will be critical in ensuring success this year.

I am most proud of our achievements as a school community this term. We have seen great adaptability and agility as well as a positive growth mindset from all students and staff this year. They have all achieved in ways that might not have been even thought of prior to this year of COVID.

Finally, I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to all parents, students, School Council members and other well-wishers as we navigated what is perhaps the most challenging year in the history of education in Victoria. We are proud of the efforts of all staff and students and so thankful for the support of our parents and broader community.

This whole experience has made Box Hill High School bigger, better and stronger than ever before.

I wish you all a well-deserved rest during the term break.
