It’s who we are.

Creativity. It’s a concept that means many things to each one of us. For some, it is born out of inspiration, for others, boredom. What shall we do? ‘I know. Let’s play that game again, only this time we’ll make up new rules’. Creativity follows a problem. How am I gong to fix this when I don’t have the part I need? How am I going to cook this recipe when I don’t have one of the ingredients in my kitchen? The answer is that we get creative. We try something we wouldn’t have done before.

Covid-19 has caused us to be more creative. We have had to find new ways to amuse ourselves, to get exercise and to make do. We have had to solve problems we never thought we would have to, often to do with technology. How good is YouTube? Yet Covid-19 did not invent creativity. Creativity is core to what makes us human, even those of us who do not think of themselves as being artistic. And we have been artistic all year here at Box Hill High School, whether on campus or at home.

I want to pay tribute to all the students from Years 7 to 12 who took an Arts subject this year. Well done on managing switching between learning from home to school and back again. This is an even greater achievement for our senior students. I cannot speak for all subjects, but delivering a practical arts subject via the internet is challenging. And so, I would like also to pay tribute to the Arts teachers who did the almost impossible, continually reinventing their program whilst keeping their students engaged. Thank you, team, you are all amazing!

I would like to thank all the student Arts leaders for your wonderful help and support during this year. Your teachers really appreciate you.

So, take a moment to appreciate all the various artistic expressions by our students, found on this page. And next time you are presented with a problem, remember to get creative.
