Zooming with the Governor

Her Excellency Linda Dessau and Mr Tony Howard

In late August, our Year 12 Legal Studies class met the Victorian Governor, Her Excellency Linda Dessau  and her husband, Mr Tony Howard. Box Hill High School was the second school to do this in a completely virtual setting with all participants at home. The students asked excellent questions and represented our school as you would expect in such a setting. The Governor's office tweeted about the visit too.

While many Victorians go day to day amid the Coronavirus Pandemic, in a constant state of anticipation of another Daniel Andrews press conference, the Year 12 Legal Studies class turned to another Victorian leader to ask the questions that really mattered, such as “Why do you support Essendon?” (Thanks Kai).

In all seriousness, Remote Learning has hampered learning efforts for many across the school system, however the crafty Mr Veal used it as an opportunity to get in touch with the Governor of Victoria, Her Excellency Linda Dessau.

Our class was graciously granted a 30 minute Zoom call with Her Excellency and her husband Mr Tony Howard, making the most of our society’s newly minted technological skills to inquire about the Victorian legal and governance system. Her Excellency was enthusiastic in answering our class’ questions, ranging from advice for the Class of 2020 to the Executive appointment process and the role of Her Excellency in daily life and official duties.

It was an inspiring and enlightening interview, and all were left with a greater knowledge of the role of the Executive branch of the Victorian Government, important to know in anticipation of the end of year Legal Studies exam and into the future.
