Athletics Carnival

The 2020 Athletics Carnival was held today and there was great participation and school spirit displayed. There were three records broken on the day (any updates to come) with Emerson Fittler breaking the 100m record for U16s in 10.87, Nathan Czinner  broke the Long Jump record for the U17s and Ben Ferguson broke the Triple Jump record U13s by one centimetre!

There will be a full report in the next issue of our College newsletter and a slideshow of photos will be put together for the students. Thanks to all students and staff for their efforts on the day.

Katherine Hosking and Isabella (Bella) Hosking have both made their respective Australian Teams for the upcoming World Championships. Isabella being Katherine's younger sibling joins the  the line up for the U19 Team. The announcement is somewhat bittersweet for Katherine and Bella due to the uncertainly of international travel facing Australians at the moment.  They will need to forgo the privilege of competing for their country but are very grateful for the selection and the ongoing support they have from sponsors, family and friends.  Keep up the great work Katherine and Bella! A future representation post-COVID will be all the more exciting.

Congratulations to the other selected riders. I would like to thank everyone who has supported me and continues to support me in these crazy times!

Futsal Success

During the school holidays, three O’Connor students, Tom Honeysett, Jake and Tyler McCann, participated in the Northern Regional Futsal Tournament, held at the Carrara Sporting Complex, on the Gold Coast.

Jake played for the Brisbane Redbacks U18’s, and was a standout throughout the competition.

Tyler and Tom represented Far NNSW U16’s and made the finals losing to eventual winners Moreton Bay.

Both boys are scheduled to attend the National Schools Titles, to be held in Brisbane during the next school holidays depending upon the status of border crossing restrictions.

We wish them the best of luck!

Girls Rugby

Girls’ Rugby - North West Regional Youth Rugby Competition Week 1

Last Friday night, the U16 and U14 O’Connor Girls’ Rugby Squads played their first week of Rugby in the North West Regional Youth Rugby Competition out at Sport UNE. There was such a great atmosphere with a huge buzz that sport was finally back!

The girls played exceptionally well with some notable performances from all the new talent this year. Many tries were scored and all girls came off the field of play feeling proud that their hard work and motivation has paid off. The U16s squad were unbeatable in all games and the U14 sides played fantastically with a mixture of wins and losses.

A huge shout out to Phoebe Biddle and Georgia Edwards for their coaching and leadership support throughout Friday evening.
