It's always great to have ex-students contact me about their college photos, but always interesting to have students contact me about their parents or in this case grandparents. Bruce (Ellis) Butler was the band leader in the De La Salle orchestra in 1925 and his grandson Bruce sent me this wonderful photo. from 95 years ago.

Do you like being a Food Tech teacher?

Recently in Year 9 FT, Josh asked me if I enjoyed being a Food Tech teacher. I replied that the highlight of my day was when I got to see students proud of their work. Over the past few days we have been back to basics in the kitchen learning how to line a tin and bake a cake. Everyone had a perfect product - not one error! The next lesson I challenged the students to apply an old fashioned feather icing style, a technique that I haven't used for a while myself. Although not all the products were perfect this time each student took care to apply the skill and was able to identify areas for improvement.

In Year 11 Hospitality we have turned out a range of excellent sweet appetisers - no shortcuts; hand made pastry base, lemon curd, Italian meringue (bruleed), chocolate mousse and toffee lace.

The best element of this lesson was not one visible on the plate, rather it was the way in which each student contributed, popping in to help another student with a technique that they had learned or jumping in when someone was short on time. And being proud of not only the product but equally of the process.. Sweet as!

So yes Josh, I love being a Food Tech (and Hosp) teacher when YOU have success in YOUR learning - a buzz as sweet as sugar!

Year 8 RE

This Term Year 8 RE has been studying the unit’ Striving for Goodness". This week the students in 8.1 have been working in small groups planning acts of kindness for the school community. Two groups have researched inspirational quotes and written them in coloured chalk in the Quad and other cemented areas around the school to uplift spirits.

Another group planned a script demonstrating how acts of kindness often have a ripple effect and transformed their script into a movie. One other group researched inspirational sayings and have created mini coloured posters which they are laminating and placing in classrooms to inspire students and staff. One other group is creating a kindness scavenger hunt challenge. The students have written instructions for acts of kindness on post it notes  and will hide these around the school. The student who finds each post it note needs to  photograph themselves doing the act of kindness stated on the note and email it Mrs. Fittler. The student who performs the most acts of kindness will receive a prize.

If you would like to support this great cause, please contact Vicki Channon and we can organise delivery. Small size would suit children or small adults. Mr May's children were great models. Medium size fits Mrs Channon and large size fits Mrs Channon's husband. :-)
