EDSC VCAL Mask Project

Due to the recent mask mandate in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Year 11 VCAL class decided to help the community by giving up their class time to make hand made masks.

Our first challenge was to learn how to make them from scratch. Textiles teacher Ms Stubbs and additional assistance from other teachers, we were able to work as a team and produce quality masks.

We all worked at different stations of an assembly line. The first step was to cut the fabric, then we pinned the fabric together. After pinning the fabric together, we sewed the pieces together. After this we pinned the interlacing and the outside fabric together and then we pin the pieces together. After sewing the pieces together, we sew the elastic into the middle layer and then they are done.

We were very pleased with the result. Our plan is to sell the masks to raise money for an upcoming VCAL project. Not only was this a service to the community and a good learning experience, it also ticked off our outcomes for all 4 VCAL subjects at the same time which include PDS (Personal Development Skills), WRS (Work Related Skills), Literacy and Numeracy.

Thanks to all teachers and students who helped us make the masks and to all people who are continuing to follow the rules and keeping the community safe.
