Water Polo

All teams played their first games of the season last week. A beautiful spring afternoon provided a perfect backdrop for the matches, which were contested in a spirit of camaraderie and competition. It was a strong start for KWS, with a number of teams winning, while other score-lines were very close.

Special mention and congratulations are due to the two Year 7 teams, Hydra and Kraken, who each won their very first game. Bravo to all involved! Other teams to achieve victory were the 1sts and the 4ths in the Open Division, as well as the Barracudas and Orcas in the Intermediate division.

The draw is shared on Team App each week, but this is the link where you can find the draw for the rest of the season if you are making family plans further in advance. The draw continues into our school holidays, but we will arrange to play those matches at alternative times.

Cricket

La Nina has already disrupted some cricket this season with Round 2 for most teams being abandoned. It was great to see a full day’s cricket last Saturday despite the forecast. There have been some excellent individual performances already this season:

  • Mr Walter Prowse 74 v CYMS, Rnd 2 (1st XI)
  • Mr David Hunter 63 v Rugby Union, Rnd 1 (1st XI)
  • James Glasson 58 not out v CYMS, Rnd 1 (2nd XI)
  • Charlie Condon 51 not out v OC, Rnd 1 (U16s)
  • Jamie Anderson 50 not out v OC, Rnd 1 (U16s)
  • Mr Stuart Crisp 6/22 v CYMS, Rnd 1 (2nd XI)
  • Nelson Shepherd 6/44 v Centrals, Rnd 4 (1st XI)

The First XI had an agonisingly close loss to CYMS in their T20 Bonnor Cup season opener, losing on the last ball to an overthrow after almost defending 98 in a rain affected game under lights at Wade Park. CYMS boasted Zimbabwe former international Vusi Sibanda, who played 14 Tests and 127 ODIs for his country. Mr Stuart Crisp (2/16) can claim honours for bowling Sibanda (8)!

Match Reports

2nd XI Round 3 v Centrals Red

The day started off again with a loss of the toss which meant Kinross was sent into bat. Openers were James Glasson and Mr Ronald but unfortunately both got caught behind. After the fall of the

first few batters Stu Crisp came in and put on a total of 26 runs. After Stu Crisp came Angus Staniforth who played smartly and got 32 runs making him the highest run scorer for the day. After

35.5 overs we had put on a score of 109 runs, well below par but indicative of the tight Centrals bowling. In reply, first to come onto bowl was Hugh Thompson. He bowled some very tight overs, along with a maiden, which were greatly needed. He was followed by Stu Crisp who came on and got 4 wickets off 8 overs. Harry Priest, our bowler of the day, who bowled 8 overs, took 2 wickets, had 3 maidens and only let Centrals get 15 runs, keeping the pressure on the chase. Our other bowlers Sam Gee, Henry Forsyth and Jock Stuart all bowled well. Sam got 2 wickets, Henry kept Centrals to 16 runs off his bowling and Jock had the hardest job on the day, which was bowling the last few overs, but he bowled very well and got a wicket. Our fielding, enthusiasm and positivity on the day was extraordinary which made it such a close game, but we just couldn’t keep Centrals out making them the winners by just one wicket. Our defence of such a low total gives us confidence for the remainder of the season.

Centenary Cup – KWS Blue v KWS White Round 3

The “junior” KWS White team came out on top of their more senior opposition, KWS Blue. Blue won the toss and chose to bat on the even Sally Kennett astro pitch. Saxon Buckley (14) opened the innings with calm despite losing his partner, Charlie Bird, early. Ollie Charlton (16) helped consolidate before Buckley was skittled by Andrew May (2/2) leading to a collapse. Will Englund (22no) got Blue to a total of sorts, 63, but White had more or less done the damage, with Mack Johnston (2/5) and Archie Baldwinson (2/16) helping May inflict the pain. In response, White intended to have an early mark with Luke Dominello (21) and Jamie Anderson (28no) making light work on the chase as the juniors won by 9 wickets. Well done to Mr Tim May and Mr Tom Nock for their contributions to White, no doubt assisting with their experience to channel the junior talent and energy. Blue have a much needed bye to lick their wounds, while White will be looking to consolidate a top three spot on the ladder against Cavaliers next Saturday.

U16 Scorchers Round 1

On Saturday 17th of October the Scorchers were pumped to have the first game of the season against Orange City. It was a beautiful day with the sun out but very high winds. The City Warriors won the toss and chose to field, sending the Scorchers to the middle. The openers Jamie Anderson and Angus Pengilly gave the team a very good start having a partnership of 70 runs before drinks. With Jamie retiring at 50 and Angus totalling 37. Next in line were Charlie Condon and Charlie Tink. The entertainment continued with Charlie Condon hitting four 6s then retiring at 50 after 29 balls. With three overs left Cale Slack-Smith brought the total to 208 runs with only 4 wickets falling. A fantastic result!

The Scorchers had an early wicket giving the Scorchers lots of confidence. Angus Cornish from OC came in at number three, hitting a well-earned 55 off 58 balls and retiring putting the KWS attack under some pressure. The Scorchers bowling was excellent though getting quick wickets before A Cullen scored 40 off 21 balls hitting 2 sixes and again threatening a boil-over. William Kerr bowled exceptionally with 2/34, with the team bowling out the Warriors for 8/179 with a sigh of relief and leaving the Scorchers with a well-earned win, ready for next week against CYMS Gold. A great start to the season!

U13 Sixers Round 3

After their rained out fixture last week the Sixers were looking forward to getting back on the field and playing some cricket. Our wishes were fulfilled as no rain meant the game against the Orange City Crusaders could go ahead and we managed to play some cricket...but not much… because the Crusaders bowled us out for 18 and knocked off their target after two overs.

The toss – using a 1 Euro coin to keep things interesting – was lost by Crusaders and the Sixers captain Sam Hughes elected to bat first. Batting first is always the best thing to do in any game of cricket. As WG Grace said: “When you win the toss, bat. If you are in doubt, think about it, then bat. If you have very big doubts, consult a colleague, then bat.” Unfortunately, the idea of setting a target to bowl at and getting the scoreboard to help us did not eventuate as a combination of very good bowling and some reckless shots saw the Sixers dismissed in 11 overs. Amidst the carnage several players made encouraging starts most notably Sam Hughes, Fergus Strudwick, Finn Price and Ashton Nock - who played some crisp shots and remained undefeated on 6 at the end.

The Crusaders managed to reach their target in a little more than two overs and everyone received an early mark.

Thanks go to Nelson Shepherd and Tom Kiss for umpiring and to all parents for their support.

The game might have been over very quickly, but it was a valuable learning experience. The main lesson was that good bowling must be respected and when you receive a good ball it is better to respond to it with a sound defensive shot as opposed to an attempted heave with head in the air. Back to the nets!
