Community Tree Planting

Brian Crouch

On Thursday 24th September, the Year 6 student leaders were invited to the Point Walter Recreation Centre to help establish new gardens. Burrendah was selected due to the relationship that staff and students have built up during Year 6 camps.

Six garden beds were designed based on each of the Noongar seasons. Medicinal and edible plants were planted in each area to correspond with the seasons. A Noongar elder, Mr McGuire performed a welcome to country and discussed the local environment. A botanical expert then explained the correct planting technique for the more than 500 plants he had selected for the students to plant.

On a warm day, the students were extremely diligent in their tasks. They dug, unpotted, placed, backfilled, and watered over and over until the last plant was covered.

After cleaning up the students were supplied with a free lunch from the camp chef. It was greatly appreciated.

The students were complimented on their effort and invited to return at any time to the camp to monitor the growth of the gardens they had built. I am sure many students and community groups will benefit from the new plants for many years to come.
