Opportunities beyond 2020

This time of year marks the final chapter of secondary schooling for our Year 12 students; the last class, the last day to wear school uniform, the last assembly. This milestone is significant for our students and it also brings the next step in their life and career journey, be it further study, training, apprenticeships or employment.

Beyond 2020 - changes to the world of work

The year 2020 has seen some major changes to employment and training. It is only natural to now ask how these changes might affect the future outlook for our students as they take this next step. Some of the key data analysis has been identified and summarised in the slides below (from a recent presentation by Ivan Neville – Department of Education Sills and Employment).

Please take note of the Key Messages:

  • Now is not the time to quit school or studies
    • some of the ‘Free TAFE’ options might be a better choice than a Gap year in 2021.
    • there are many pathway options to explore.
  • Post-school qualifications are important - but not just university
    • Vocational Training is being supported to develop skill areas that will be required to meet economic stimulus initiatives. TAFE doesn’t have to be only the ‘Plan B’.
  • Explore Options
  • There will be some ongoing challenges
  • Students need to be persistent, creative, flexible and seek out opportunities
    • 2020 has demanded that these skills begin to be developed.

New Opportunities

“Change is inevitable, and the disruption it causes often brings both inconvenience and opportunity
– Robert Scoble

There are new opportunities that will unfold. One example is the recently announced boost to support new apprentices and trainees. It is worth noting that school leavers and 2021 VCAL students looking for School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs) are eligible for this scheme.

$1.2 billion to boost apprenticeships and traineeships

The Federal Government will subsidise 50% of the wages for 100,000 new apprentices and trainees. The $1.2 billion announcements will support employers and create jobs for apprentices and trainees.
