Port Phillip Bay Sustainability Guest Speakers

During remote learning and whilst we have been back at school, we have had some awesome incursions and watched some fantastic online sessions about the wonderful Port Phillip Bay.

Earlier this year, all our students participated in the 'Sam the Seadragon and Radical Recycling' incursions run by the Port Phillip Eco Centre. They focused on the importance of reducing plastic waste and how critical it is to ensure plastics and rubbish do not get into our waterways.

Our wonderful Green Team member, Meg, ran a very informative session about the school's arboreal habitat renewal project in Term 3. She provided the Sustainability leaders with information about a range of different native trees that are being considered to be planted on our school's campus and new nature play space.

The 3/4's watched the wonderful Dr Kate Rob talk all about the Burrunan Dolphins in Port Phillip Bay this term.

The 5/6's listened to a range of speakers from Park's Victoria. Here are some of their learnings from the sessions:

"Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary is a beautiful place where wildlife is protected. Many creatures live there such as the blue ring octopus, starfish, other small fish and also some other interesting creatures. There are 3 sections of this reef with lots of unique creatures living there. People have not been keeping the area clean but it is really good that Parks Victoria is educating us about it."- Jerome

"I found this video very interesting. I learnt a lot. Some things that I learnt were: There are lots of sea creatures including crabs, blue-ringed octopus, starfish and a variety of seabirds. The sanctuary is divided into three sections. There are a lot of rocks which provide shelter for periwinkles. I learnt to not take away shells because hermit crabs will need them in the future. The main message I took away from this is - "Takeaway memories and leave behind footprints". - Zara.J

Our Prep-2 students had some very interesting incursions about Sharks, Rays and Penguins run by the Port Phillip Eco Centre. Here are some of what they learnt:

"Penguins can stand on really cold things because of the way their skin is made. Ben the Eco Centre man showed us all the awesome fossils he has found in the Port Phillip Bay. He even found a Megladon tooth! It was huge!" - Eva

"If a male or female penguin poops or wees on the penguin egg, it will die." -Natasha

"Sharks are not as scary as people think. They don't want to hurt humans at all. Sometimes they think that humans are seals and can bite them. But once they realise that the human is not a seal they go away. We have to keep telling people that sharks are not going to hurt us, as long as we give them space." -Max
