Wellbeing MATTERS!

Wellbeing MATTERS!

Dear Families,

The SHEER JOY TO BE BACK AT SCHOOL AND LEARNING is seen all over the faces of the 1/2 students as they carry out an ‘explosive’ science experiment!

So, what helps students learn, grow and be happy at school.  One of the fundamental programs run at Sacred Heart alongside our Catholic values is our school wide PBIS program.  We’re all familiar with this ….

PBIS – Positive Behaviour Intervention Support

Our banner, matrices and blitz posters are prominent in all our learning spaces and around our school.  Teachers are constantly reviewing and teaching explicitly what this looks like in and around our school.  These four simple statements guide and assist our students to simply get the most out of their time at Sacred Heart.

Matrices ‘spell out’ for students what is expected of them, giving them a positive framework in which they can ‘be’ at school.  The Quadrangle matrices for example, (below) gives students the ways to operate positively in the quadrangle - outlining what being Responsible, Respectful and Resilient means to Be Your Best in this area of our school.

Be Your Best!

 PBIS has important guiding principles to ensure its success at Sacred Heart:

  • students learn behaviour expectations for different situations;
  • students learn expected behaviours for our school settings through explicit teaching and opportunities to practice;
  • we step in early to prevent more serious behaviour problems;
  • each student is different, so we give many kinds of behaviour support;
  • it’s important to track student behaviours to ensure we respond appropriately;
  • data is gathered to guide decisions about behaviour interventions; and
  • staff members are consistent in how we encourage expected behaviours and discourage noncompliance.

Our focus is on teaching expectations, preventing problems, and using logical consequences.  We look for consequences that are effective in changing student behaviour, not just in the moment, but in the future as well.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any concerns or queries.
