BBPS Life
Harry S and Jadson enjoying the new library
Prep
Recent highlights in Prep have been:
- Counting! Making playdough cookies and playing other games like "race to trace" and "tug of war" are helping our preps to practice counting and recording skills.
- Visiting our refurbished library and choosing their own book.
- Literacy - continuing with Possum Magic and mapping the possums' journey across Australia including using phonics to spell labels
Grades 1 and 2
Grade 1:
Teddy: "We learnt how to see dots or counters and recognise the number"
Charlotte "I liked Kaboom Sports. We were in groups and we did lots of fun things"
Finnegan "One day our TV wasn't working so we had to write about our weekends"
Amelie "When we are reading we are stopping when there is something we don't understand. We are monitoring and fixing up using strategies like sounding out words"
Grade 2:
Grade 2 highlights have included learning about autobiographies and presenting to the class in our "Breaking News" activity, which allows us to share information about our personal lives. In maths we have been using fluency games to learn more about place value!
Thomas G "We have been making arty hands to celebrate different cultures for Harmony day"
Tallulah "I decorated my hand to look like the cover of my book and a design like Ms Prockiw showed us"
Elena "We are in our new library. I chose this book because horses are my favourite animal and I have a horse at my grandparents' farm called Ellie"
Thomas W "I chose this book because I've read all the other books in the series. They're really funny because they are about bad guys who are trying to be good"
Grades 3 and 4
Grades 3 and 4 have enjoyed the introduction of Spelling Mastery, a direct instruction program with proven results. It uses morphographs, which are logical fragments of words (such as the prefix 'a' in 'atypical' to denote something that is "not").
Grade 4 students continue to research ANZAC day in preparation for their commemoration of this important Australian day on our first day back following the upcoming school holidays.
Narrative writing has been a lot of fun, but is now drawing to a close as students shift their focus to persuasive writing.
Our unit on empowering language continues, with students developing a greater understanding of the power and impact of language in relationships.
Grades 5 and 6
Grade 5 students have been getting a taste of politics as they participate in the Brighton Beach Primary School Parliament. They have drafted and debated bills and voted on legislation. They can be proud of being part of the democratic process here at BBPS!
A favourite activity has been the Campsite Design Challenge. Students have imagined their own campsites, and have then drafted their own campsite maps including laying out features on a grid (to scale, of course!) and providing references and a key.
Grade 6 students continue to explore open ended maths questions and are also starting a mini unit on location and transformation looking at maps and using grids.
A major highlight for grade 6 students has been the opportunity to attend the Halogen National Young Leaders Day at MCEC, where they heard from a variety of speakers from sport stars, actors and TV presenters and other young people doing extraordinary things.
