Teaching and Learning

Prep-3 News from Mrs Lightburn

In the junior room we have all started our writers notebook and the children are enjoying writing in them.

We have nearly finished our topic of subtraction in math's and will have our post test on Friday.

In integrated studies we have been learning about living things especially animals. I have included the narratives the children published in this newsletter below. I have included some written work by our new student Kiyden.

Year 4-6 News from Miss Duffy

We have been very busy in the room with our focus on Persuasive Writing. Ask your child about the acronym of AFOREST and see if they can recall some of the persuasive devices that they can use in their writing in order to convince their audience of a particular stance.

Here are some persuasive pieces where students were asked if the farmers or Mr Fox were in the right in the story of Fantastic Mr Fox.

Students have also been working hard with the topic of fractions and decimals. This week we have been looking at decimal notation and how decimals relate to fractions.

We have recently been watching Behind The News, which is a current affairs program made specifically for students. Through watching this program, students can be better informed about the world in which they live and what is currently  happening with politics, the environment, sport and other world events. After watching an episode, we discuss the stories and students take a quiz before reflecting upon one of the stories that made an impact on them.

News From Miss Coffey

On Fridays, Miss Coffey and the Grade 4-6’s have been looking at Rocket Writing (writing for a sustained 15-20min using a picture prompt to inspire use), the Maths concept of Time (including telling the time on an analogue clock, calculating elapsed times, reading and interpreting timetables etc.) and improving our Mental Maths skills. Any additional work you can do at home to support your child with the Time concepts mentioned above would be greatly appreciated, as it can be a challenging area of Maths to master!

During Miss Coffey’s Wednesday Tutoring time with Gr 4’s, we have been working hard to hone our Persuasive Writing skills. We have been writing for the topics of ’Winter is Better than Summer or Summer is Better than Winter’, ‘Dogs are Better than Cats or Cats are Better than Dogs’ and ‘All Children Should Receive Pocket Money’. We know that a Persuasive text s has the following features; an introduction, three arguments and a conclusion. We also know we will use devices such as emotive words (words which make the reader feel or react in a particular way), time connectives (words such as firstly, lastly, in addition etc.), rhetorical questions (e.g. don’t you love ice-cream too?!), facts and expert opinions and repetition.

Mothers Day Crafts

No doubt, our Mums loved the cards and pots that the students made for them. We hope the bulbs bloom very soon and are a reminder of how much you are loved. We had a great time making the cards, planting the bulbs and decorating the pots.

Kelly Sports

Tomorrow our students begin weekly sessions ran by Coach Beau from Kelly Sports. Students will be coached in a range of skills and games with a view to not only improving their physical skills, but also increase their stamina and improve their mental health. Studies have proven that regular physical exercise is not only good for the body but vital for the mind. We are using our Active Schools Grant to provide this program free of charge to our students, how fortunate we are to be able to offer such a high quality program, without cost.
