Principal's Report

By Frank Catalano

Dear Members of the Glen Waverley Primary School Community,

I trust all is well with you and your family and welcome to the first newsletter for Term Two where so much is shared about our fabulous school.

As per usual, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me on 9802 9938 or via email at frank.catalano@education.vic.gov.au

Beginning of Term Two

I always find the beginning of a new term extremely exciting as the children and staff share their holiday stories with enthusiasm and joy. Regardless of what everyone ‘got up to’ the real issue is that the children and staff have returned to school with a ‘bounce in their step’ as everyone is now ready for a new term of learning.

As per usual there are so many things planned for our school community, may I encourage you to diarise events by scrolling through the “Important Dates for Your Diary” section within our newsletter.

Novel Coronavirus Update

It is very pleasing to note that the number of confirmed cases throughout our school has remained quite low throughout our school with reported cases spread across the year levels. Naturally this is a result of everyone being vigilant by ensuring the children remain at home if they are feeling unwell and also utilising the Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT’s). Once again, thank you everyone for the manner in which the entire GWPS community have supported one another.

Staffing Update

May I take the opportunity to welcome two new members of staff to our school:

  • Dara McCullough has joined our school administration team and brings with her a wealth of experience in an office environment and
  • Batool Nawrozi joins us as our new Digital Learning Technician.

Please join me in welcoming Daria and Batool to the Glen Waverley PS family!

What has happened across our school during the break?

The school holidays are the opportune time to have tasks completed across the school and these holidays the following were undertaken:

  • The asphalt outside the ELC has been upgraded.
  • At the point of writing this newsletter, the line marking is yet to be completed as the new asphalt needs time to ‘bleed’ or settle. We hope this will be undertaken in the next week or so
  • As you may be aware, this was a school community project that was supported by an additional levy, a sincere thank you to everyone for your support as it is appreciated immensely
  • Glass panels were installed in the ELC to mitigate noise
  • The drains along the side and back of the school were cleaned and
  • The carpet was replaced in 4C’s and 5E’s portable

Congratulations to Ms Anna Meng

Over the school holidays Ms Meng informed me of the safe arrival of her first child, baby Gemma who was born on April 16th which is also her husband’s (Bobby’s) birthday! Attached are some photos of Gemma for everyone’s enjoyment. On behalf of our school community, a sincere congratulations to Anna, Bobby and their entire family and we all look forward to meeting baby Gemma as soon as possible!

Congratulations to the following children for their outstanding achievements:

Basketball Grand Final– over the holidays Laila, Gauri and Aaliya (Year 6) played in their basketball grand final, as you will note from their report below, it was an amazing effort to reach the grand final and an even more incredible effort to win it – well done and congratulations girls!!

Over the school holiday we won our basketball grand final against the South East Eagles and though this was already a huge achievement, our journey to the grand finals is a bigger achievement.

We had an incredible start to the league as we had been on an undefeatable winning streak of 7 games until we had unfortunately lost to BSRD (Belgrave South Red Devils) with a brutal 30-10 loss. This was not a onetime thing as we went on to lose another game to the Basin Wildcats 5-17 then going on to suffer a 3rd loss to the South East Eagles 22-8 but luckily we had managed to come 4th as the All Stars lost their game by a single point!

We had made it to the semi-finals to face Basin Wildcats which we had previously lost to but with effort and hard work we won vs the Wildcats 9-6 to advance to the finals where we would face the South East Eagles. Both teams played an incredibly great game but the eagles had been down by 2 and everything seemed in the clear, until 2 shots were given to the Eagles. They missed one but scored the 2nd shot. With only a second left the Eagles were in the clear to score a goal and win by a single point and as they threw the ball hoping for it to go through the hoop, it hit the rim and time had ran out, we had officially won the grand final!!

Shane Warne Memorial – Mithilesh (Mith, Year 6) is an avid cricketer and idolised Shane Warne. He attended Shane’s memorial function at the MCG and was interviewed by the ABC show, Behind the News (BTN). Below is a link to the segment in YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmzOkJGawQ4

Well done and congratulations Mith on being prepared to speak with the reporters as you managed it extremely well and are an amazing ambassador for your family and our school – we are all very proud of you!!

Basketball:

Ranuga (Year 4) enjoys playing basketball with the Wantirna Wasps and recently he played in a grand final. Ranuga informs me that his team were down by 12 points at half time and then in the second half they played exceptionally well to win by 4 points. Ranuga scored 14 points in the grand final and is extremely proud of himself.

Well done Ranuga and keep up the passion for basketball!

STEAM Workshop

It is wonderful to hear of the vast array of activities the children complete during the holidays. Some of our Year 6 students attended a STEAM workshop. Below is a reflection they wrote:

Dear Mr Catalano,

Nevin:
On Saturday the 9th of April Archis, Asher, Ravindu, Daivik and I attended a STEAM workshop in the Clayton Library regarding natural disasters. We had lots of fun building our “sticky-tape house” and we hope this brings awareness about natural disasters and the civil engineering that lies behind it. We learnt lot’s about EWB, engineers without borders, which is a non-profitable engineering group that’s purpose is to improve the quality of life for disadvantaged communities. Their challenge for us was to create a house that could survive the Haiti 7.0 Earthquake, one of the most deadly earthquakes in history.

Daivik:
This was our second Engineers Without Borders workshop and it was extremely informative! We went deeper into the true meaning of an engineer. We also learnt about natural disasters and their effects on infrastructure. For example, to survive strong winds like cyclones, tall buildings should be allowed to sway slightly in the wind! Our group learnt about the devastating events of the Haiti Earthquake with was 7.0 magnitude! With our prior knowledge, collaboration and new learning we made our own house!

Asher:
One of the parts that we liked the most was the building stage. We were told to build something to withstand an earthquake and we had to use different materials. We had thought of building a triangle like structure and once we did that we had to use something to hold the structure together and since they gave an unlimited amount of electrical tape we used the tape and made our structure resist earthquakes.

Archis:
The project was to make strategically positioned house so it can survive an earthquake and we had a great plan as to making the house but, we had a hard time converting it to our actual build. We had a few challenges such as not enough building materials or executing the plan but we powered our way through and made a house which could probably survive the Haiti earthquake. We made ours so that it won’t ever leave the ground and our best friend was tape, that is what kept our house intact and could also be turned upside down without breaking. Overall it was a educational and fun way to do science and we all enjoyed it a lot.

Ravindu:
All and all, this experience was very fun and interesting. We now have knew-found knowledge about natural disasters and the causes of them.
I would definitely recommend this.

Congratulations to the Term One Principal Learning Awards recipients

As a school principal I take sheer delight in observing and assisting the children to continually challenge themselves in order to ‘be the best person’ they can be. These are some of the reasons why each term I ask the classroom teachers to select a child that has made enormous growth, shown a high level of empathy or simply tried their best, at our school we call these the Principal Learning Awards – congratulations to the Term One recipients:
